Wow. Those lighting effects liven up the area. That's NYC, right? I'm looking forward to what Vancouver has up their sleeves. More decorative lighting effects for Vancouver downtown - should be interesting, considering the timeline is for Dec 15, 2009. Hope they don't rush the designs for the area(s).

I agree that the city could use more lighting, especially more colorful lighting as it does liven the city.

However I do not want to see billboards or advertisements, if I had my way I would ban all billboards and advertisements in the city completely. Except obviously regulated signage at the location of the businesses.

Also that picture of Young street is hideous, it makes me want to vomit. I dont see how anyone can view that as positive or nice, sure it attracts attention to the area, that its point, its advertisement(aka brain washing), but its not nice. If you want to attract attention to a area you can do it through public art, which is no different than billboards, except that its intentions are good. Contrary to popular belief public art doesnt cost tax payers more than private billboards, billboards in the end are funded by the same tax payers who are swayed by them(anyone who thinks they dont get swayed/affected is simply wrong)..so with public art you know what you paying for it, with a billboard you dont know what your paying for it, infact you dont even know that you are paying, but paying you are.

Read the above posts, there are much more that ca be done with LED screens than just advertisements. Simple paper billboards i do not like as well, but something with motion and color, especially if a sound element is added, is interesting.

well that would be public art then.
Im all for that.
I just hate billboards, im one those people who puts the TV on mute every time a commercial comes on.

If you took all the lights away, it would be just another busy, congested, dirty intersection. It's the lights and billboards that make it vibrant, not anything that actually goes on there (any New Yorker will quickly tell you that there's nothing to do in Times Square).

Lights create an illusion of excitement... Vancouver is a very boring, conservative city. If we can use some lights to create the illusion that it's more interesting and vibrant than it is, then why not?

I am actually very curious to go to Winnipeg and seeing new pictures of their ever increasing light/LED displays has enticed me more to go. Because Winnipeg seems to be using a good variety of new technology and old heritage (in buildings) in their core. Also Reno downtown is very vibrant, it is amazing for a city of only 300 000. Also the most vibrant square in Canada is lit to the max with LED screens and lights in Toronto. And yes, in New York and in Japan and even in European cities the big sounds and light displays are an attraction, and yes many people will go just for that atmosphere. I loved just walking through the commercial districts of Osaka for that very reason. They add a lot of light and color to festival events as well. And don't give me this "you don't live in downtown bullshit" people who move to city cores should expect such, and if you are unwilling to even buy blinds (or use them) while living downtown then yes you are incredibly selfish person who wants it both ways. I live in downtown Metrotown and i look straight at the mall and offices, and every day i think to myself, "this place needs festivals, lights and LED screens." Because choosing to live in a denser core area i want to actually feel the city. At night when i want to go to bed, guess what, i close my blinds! If one wants peace and quiet, then move to the suburbs or at the very least don't buy a condo overlooking the busiest commercial/entertainment streets in the metro-area! Someone here earlier was saying how a bunch of condo owners squashed a new bar that was going to open up on Robson street, well i think that is complete crap. If you buy a place on robson street it has historically been a commercial and entertainment hub for decades, so guess what, new bars opening there are just part of life! Areas like Yaletown or Coal Harbor should stay more quiet and sleepy, but areas like Granville, Gastown, Robson, #3 road, Metrotown and even Lougheed town centre i think should be pumped to the max!

Nothing personal against you jlousa, just that i love my city, and i want to see it continue to grow into a world city, and i feel smaller cities are now starting to leave us in the dust in certain aspects.
Well said.

speaking of lighting

is anyone going to Illuminate Yaletown on february 21?

ILLUMINATE yaletown
A free party in yaletown featuring contemporary light installations designed to inspire and impress

DescriptionOn February 21, 2009, for one thought provoking evening, light art will illuminate Yaletown. Cutting edge technology will mix with vibrant music and artistic vision to inspire and impress. All this in the epicenter of Vancouver’s hippest neighbourhood.

illuminate yaletown will be a free public event, featuring local and international lighting designers and leaders in lighting technology, as well as unforgettable music from DJ Leanne creating contemporary light-art-music installations in Yaletown. As the winter sun sets early, bringing the edge of darkness, illuminate yaletown rises to extend warmth and light into the urban centre.

Ranging from interactive videos, to exciting rhythms and silent perspectives, the installations will evoke emotion and dialogue. This will be Vancouver as it has never been experienced before.

The first annual illuminate yaletown is designed to be a showcase for creative talent, forcing us all to see our city from the perspective of artists. How will light blend with music? What colour should night be? How can we play with light? illuminate yaletown is an event that will encourage urbanites to discover a truly cosmopolitan experience, and be among the first to launch this winter tradition.
sounds interesting...

(you can search it on facebook)

That looks great - I hope it works out and we get to enjoy more events like it. I'm sorry I won't be in Vancouver to go. Reminds me a bit of a miniature Nuite Blanche, which is one of the cooler events that happens in Toronto (and elsewhere) each year. I went to the one in Brussels last Fall, and the vibe was fantastic... thousands of people milling around until all hours. There were a number of great outdoor light art installations with music, DJ's etc.
Here's a video of one at Albertinaplein that we just couldn't believe (hopefully this link works.. my first video post):

Anyone else think Harbor Centre needs a bit of a lighting upgrade? Looks like they're still using the old power inefficient bulbs. Looks a bit dated I must say. Would be nice for them to do something for the Olympics a la a scaled down version of the CN tower in Toronto. Even upgrading the bulbs to a more pleasant bright white and not the 70's yellow look shouldn't be too much of a strain budget wise. And how about BC place? Any plans to replace those old bulbs sitting around the dome for the Olympics? They don't really illuminate anything and and look like old Christmas lights more than anything. Also, at least 5 of them are burnt out at any given time.

Funky, i like it! Also i love the Granville street re-design lights, i can't wait to see them installed.

Also i agree with Harbour Center and BC place, if anywhere in this city needs an upgrade in lighting displays it is those two buildings. Especially Harbour Center.

^Ya it looked great in person. I really liked the looks of those angular structures in general. Plus it looks like they have some sort of spotlights installed along the top too.

A few more pics I just uploaded:
