^^ but it's still way more than what was 'going on' in the 90's.

Although we may not be developing like Toronto or Vancouver (several 200+ ft towers), it doesn't mean we're not making progress.
Montreal, as an example, spent the last several years on infil projects. And, imo, it's a much better City to spend time in than Toronto.

They could have chosen to put this motel or the LTH etc along Upper James, or near Mac, or up by Meadowlands... but for whatever reason people are choosing Downtown again. Infill is where a downtown like ours needs to start. Popping up a skyscraper while there are empty lots EVERYwhere doesn't make sense. The City is working on filling those holes which to me looks like progress. Slow progress, but hey, Welcome to Hamilton!

There's been a TON of infill and lots of projects downtown over the past 5 years.
This one is getting attention because it's one of the worst.

Like most of us, I'm a huge Hamilton fan.
I NEVER hear Ted bring any good ideas to the table. I never hear him talk about public meetings he's attended or involvement in projects to bring LRT here or downtown brainstorming sessions, community council meetings etc.....
I realize I'm about to be accused of having a "hate on" for something or other, but the fact is, I refuse to stand by while some troll tries to hijack a forum about Hamilton.
I could name more than 20 projects that have taken place in recent years, as could most of you.
It's pretty bad when good Hamilton fans like the Dude feel the need to leave the forum.
It's fine if Ted wants to praise suburbs more than urbanism. I really don't care. But don't start lying about what has or hasn't happened downtown in recent years.
Change is all around us. those of us who actually live in this city care about design, urban fabric and livability.

Its a shame there are a few people on this site who used to live in Hamilton but moved away because it was going through crappy times 5 or 10 years ago. Now that its starting to pick up, they feel that they have to rationalize that they made the right decision by trying to nullify everything.

My comment was in no way meant to be provocative, nor was it an indication that I do not like Hamilton. I just do not think that all that much is going on.

You are not the Hamilton champion you claim to be. I have seen you say that people refused to "get off their duffs" and "acted like Hamiltonians" when an event was underattended. I have seen you come back from days in Buffalo and Toronto and pretty much claim that Hamilton does not have much going on. I can provide quotes if necessary.

Had I said anything like any of the things you said, I would have been roasted.

The building would be a student residence. It is being proposed by the developer that built OneFortyNine Luxury Residences.

This may just be a preliminary concept, but I bet it will be much like the OneFortyNine development. At least the DRP is encouraging them to pretty it up and consider the local context:

The panellists agreed the building could be improved from a design standpoint, especially through the incorporation of design elements that would spill over from the designated heritage building next door.

"There are some improvements that need to be done to be more sympathetic to the neighbourhood," said Colizza, who also recommended the developer consider building a few storeys higher, thereby eliminating the building's west wing.

That would eliminate proximity to the heritage building and the "looming mass overlooking their rear yards" for the neighbourhood behind the building, he said.

Strikes me as a little far from Mohawk and McMaster to gear it towards students, but I'm sure it would do fine.

How old is that Days Inn? I guess the same guy already owns it so the site makes sense for him.

But it doesn't look Stalinist. Siberian worker city yes, but those were (mostly)Khrushchev's doing. Stalin was all about the fancy and ornate.(Near the end rebuilding after the war caused some corner cutting, but he still wanted things ornate.)

rant/ at what point will property values in this town be high enough that developers start building significant buildings? Has there been a single new building built during this so-called revival with any lasting value? Core Urban has done some nice redevelopments. Same with Treble Hall and even the Stinson school, on the outside. The new medical campus is ok. Rudy Hulst Commons and Good Shepherd square pretty nice. None of the above merit much of a second look. Every single Vranich project is a POS, father and son, new stadium is a POS, City Square is totally bland. Hamilton of the 2010s is looking exactly as horrible as Hamilton of the 1960s-70s. /rant
