From what I hear, Yale has been flexible in the past. When the '90s recession staggered JS, a lot of places ended up converted to dollar-a-year charity space that I assume was used as a tax write-off. But maybe the catch was that the deal was strictly for non-profits. (Arts Hamilton used to be in JS at that time.)

So does it appear they are ready to relocate this long Easter weekend?

Yeah it does... The space in Jackson Square is ready and they are on schedule to move this weekend.

I don't think the market is moving until AFTER Easter weekend. A neighbour is a vendor in there and Easter is their busiest time.

Moving Update!

The Hamilton Farmers' Market is undergoing a renovation to serve you better.
The Market will be moving to Jackson Square after the Easter Weekend.
The Market will be closed from Sunday April 12 until Thursday April 23rd, 2009. We will reopen April 23rd at the new location in Jackson Square, just down from Dollorama.
We will continue to offer one free hour of parking at the York Blvd. Parkade. You must still validate your parking ticket at the Market Office.

You can see plans for the renovation at:

Market gets ready to move

April 10, 2009
By Dana Brown
http://www.thespec.com/News/BreakingNews/article/546502

Saturday will be the last day for the Hamilton Farmers’ Market in its current location.

The closure is to make way for renovations slated to start on the market and the Central Library in May.

During that time, the main entrances to the market and library on York Boulevard will be closed.

Both facilities must be accessed by going through Jackson Square.

The market will be moved to a spot near the food court and Dollarama.

For the next week and a half, the market will be closed. It will re-open Thursday, April 23. Market hours will stay the same.

In addition to the renovations, the city will also be doing upgrades to York Boulevard between Bay and James streets.

All of the work is expected to be finished by next fall.

I've relocated the thread here since it's nearly under construction.

A few pics from Saturday, last day of being open at the current site until reno is complete. Apparently word got out, because the place was absolutely packed. This was around 10am on Saturday.

Easter Saturday is one of the busiest grocery shopping days of the year regardless.

Market Re-Opens At Temporary Location

Ken Mann
CHML

The Hamilton Farmer's Market has re-opened for the first time at its new temporary location.

It can be found in Jackson Square, near the food court, where it will remain until the fall of 2010.

Stallholders have been relocated while the farmer's market and central library go through an 11 million dollar facelift.

Anyone check the temporary market today?

I did a walk through this aft and thought it looked pretty decent for a temporary spot. Its strange not knowing where vendors are located, but I'm sure I'll get over that pretty quick.

Overall, I think the spot will work well... and I'm excited for the reno to start soon.

Also of note, it was really busy today, which is good to see.

Most if not all vendors on CHCH seem to really want to stay at the new temporary location.

I was there today, it was nice. Doesn't seem very temporary at all, it even features a much bigger dining area than the permanent location did. As already posted, it was VERY busy. I can definitely see the place staying popular at the temporary location.

I was there too, although around 5, so it didn't seem that busy.

Maybe with the market open there they will open some stores at the far end. I think the mall could support another Timmy's.

New Farmer's market

Went in today Open, wide aisles and fairly busy. Like looked so clean. I don't know about you but maybe it should consider staying up stairs.
just put some pick up and drop off parking along Bay all day or one hour free under the food court Sats, weekdays 7-8:30 and after 5 p.m.
I really liked it.
If it was to stay where it is what are some suggestions for the renovated area. maybe a Sobey's or bowling alley.
Not to belabour a dead issue but it sure is a big change for the better with City Mall or HCC and now the Farmer's market.
The only real store that could make a go of it would be a Bulk Barn.

^^ a grocery store definitely needs to go there. There aren't any (the closest is the Rexall) in the core.

As much as I like the new space, I like the renovation plans for the "old" space even more. I don't want the Farmers Market to stay in the temporary location. Why come up with ideas on what to put in the "old" space? How about instead trying to figure out what to do with the temporary space once the Farmers Market is not using it any more? I'd hate to see it just closed down and off limits again. I think the connection to Copps should be opened up again.

So what can it be

When the Farner's market returns to it's roots, what could you do with the temporary location?
Copps sports patio wih jumbo t.v.s (tail gate party place).
Grocery store like Sobey's with meals on the run deli for the afterwork condoites;
Expand Coles to a Chapter's;
small Senior's rec centre with mall walker's club;
Walk in clinic and dental office;
Bike shop with sports store (Kayaks, hiking)
Boston pizza.
East side marios
Kelseys
Sell Good life to Farmers market for more space or just trade locations. Better for office staff.
???????????????????
Giant government service centre like on nash and Barton
The list is endless the question is for them to survive.
?????????

We really need a real grocery store in the core, though I'd still like to see one go in the bingo hall. Two birds with one stone.

Fitting one in JS is an interesting idea, and completely possible. Maybe even one of the new Metro format stores which already has presence/recognizability nearby
