Hi all, I just moved back to Vancouver after working in Montreal for 1.5 years. I found this site by searching for information on a new build I'm buying into in New West.

Great discussions on here so far from what I've seen, maybe I will be able to contribute a bit as well once I'm all sorted out with my move

I just wanted to say this: thanks for the great information that you guys have been/are posting, props for the commitment and kudos for the enthusiasm.

Cheers,
Frank

Newbie

Hi All,

I'm a Vancouverite with a huge, geeky interest in urban issues, sustainability and public transportation. I've been lurking here for a bit and love to read everyone's takes on the issues facing Greater Vancouver. I'm a bit of neophyte in terms of knowledge -- I don't work in urban planning, engineering or government. Look forward to posting.

Long time lurker, but finally decided to make an account. I've lived in the Vancouver area all my life and have relied heavily on public transit to get me everywhere, from downtown to Whiterock and Maple Ridge. Hopefully I can contribute to the Transportation and Infrastructure side of things.

Hey there,

I suppose it's official, so I thought I'd come aboard and introduce myself. I'm currently a member of the Calgary local forum, but my employer is transferring me out to Vancouver for July 2. I was never much an active participant on the Calgary forum, as it was never really my home, although I've lived here physically for quite some time now.

I'm from BC. Kamloops specifically, born and raised, lived in the province for nearly 25 years and consider BC home. always was, always will. I bleed Canucks colors, and am excited to possibly see a game next year. Unfortunately, I wont get to see them hoist the cup live this year, but I'm going to try and get to some games next season.

While I know BC well, consider it home, have family all throughout the south of the province, I have never actually lived in Vancouver before, nor do I have family in Vancouver (closest are Abbotsford and Victoria, and formerly Squamish). I've got, in my mind, a very short time frame to find a place and actually move. I could use some help if there are a few kind souls around here who wouldn't mind to lend a hand.

our office is at the Broadway Tech Center, near Renfrew skytrain. I don't actually drive. (am blind in R eye, not the greatest vision in the L). so need to be near transit, preferably skytrain. the plus side is that CNIB offers free transit for skytrain, bus, seabus, WCE with my client card, so that's fortunately a non-issue.

I'm going to be renting, at least for the first year. I'm paying $1250 in Beltline Calgary; quite pricey for this town, but want to keep it close to that for Vancouver, yes it's just myself, so even a 1 bdrm would work. I don't particularly want a shoebox or somebody's dirty dark basement.

I would need the day to day stuff be close by, and have access to some fun. Based on those needs, where would you all suggest I look for places to live?

I was at first looking around the Brentwood Mall area, then Edmonds... even a few places around Fairview-Mt Pleasant. but what has caught my eye now is Plaza 88 in New West. Trains are right downstairs, no walk or bus to the train. I could be closer to DT, say Knight and King Edward Village,at about the same price, for example, but a bus or walk to the train would be at least 20 minutes or more including wait times. having the train right downstairs would save on that time for sure. there's a balcony, which is a big deal for me, Also, because I'm not used to the rain, if I need something (day to day shopping, etc), I iwll have a Safeway, SDM, etc right downstairs, so my understanding is that I wont even have to get wet if I don't want to on certain days. another plus. If I want to go for a run, the quay boardwalk is easy to get to from my understanding. I guess what I don't know about New West is what is the vibe like? is it anything like Kits, or Main/Mt Pleasant where there are lots of cool places to just hang out/spend the afternoon on a patio somewhere, etc? anything else I should know about the area? I'm not really that familiar with the community itself, moreso the accessability of being immediately at skytrain.

like I said, I've looked at a lot, Plaza 88 is my current interest, there will be a good selection of units available by July 1, according to the guy, but I'll know more at the end of May. but if there are any other suggestions based on my needs and preferences above, I'd love to hear them!

I'm going to have a ton more questions, will let fire as they come to me! Look forward to some good discussion!!

Edmonton!? Good to hear there's another Kamloopsian/Albertan in the Vancouver forum. Do you live in Van as well? or just urbanly curious?

Kamloops is a great town. a great, somewhat dying town. but it's home, and I love it. if I had the option to work from the Kamloops office, or Kelowna, etc... I'd be all over it.

Thanks bulliver!

Nah, lived in Van for about 8 months while attending SFU, but I had to drop out and move back home. That was years ago. Spend my time between Edmonton and Penticton now. Still consider myself a BC boy though...likely always will.

Rent:

For a 1 bedroom in an older 3 story walk-up, 950 - 1000 per month. And there are newer buildings where rents will run you 1200 - 1400 per month, but the suites are smaller.

Vibe:

Some call this area hipster, but it is much more diverse than that. This area is probably the friendliest neighborhood in Vancouver, that I've experienced anyways, and it is very walkable. It is a lot less sketchy here than New West or Commercial Drive.

Fun:

Depending on your idea of fun, there are a lot of little independent restaurants that double as bars late at night, some with live music and one right now with a little burlesque performance on Saturday nights. There is also the Biltmore that has more serious musical acts and to a lesser extent there is the Anza club. Downtown Van is also close by with all it's amenities.

Transit:

The B-Line bus runs along Broadway giving you a fairly quick connection to either the Expo Line or Millenium Line at Broadway/Commercial Station. It would be fairly easy to get to Broadway Tech Centre, although not as convenient as being close to a Skytrain station.

I'm sure I missed a bunch of stuff, but IMHO Mt. Pleasant has far more to offer than New West. But to each their own.

Welcome to our little place on the forums.

I live in Plaza 88 and have for the past 2 years. Prior to here, I used to live in Fairview, but wanted to try out a brand new place for awhile.

Note that the commercial part of the development likely won't be done until the fall, but it is moving on at a brisk pace. There is an IGA and Pharmasave nearby, so that kinda fixes the groceries/pharmacy question.

New West has a lot of old people and seems like it has a lot of people on welfare. It isn't supremely sketchy (e.g. Surrey), but it definitely doesn't have as many friendly people as other places I've lived. I've never felt threatened or scared, but then again, I'm a 24 year old male.

There aren't a lot of patios around here, so much of your entertainment will probably have to be done in Vancouver. There are a few nice ones along Columbia, but nothing to get too excited about. Being right on Skytrain, getting to Vancouver is very easy, and sometimes I feel like I live in the city.

Let me know via PM if you have any more specific questions about the area or Plaza 88 development.
