Curious what this means for Centennial Mills, if anything, seeing as a pretty major feature of this park is the ped bridge over Naito.

Ah, just answered my own question. The bridge is actually not getting built at all -- it "may" be added in the future. This cannot bode well for the Centennial Mills plan.

That doesn't mean Centennial Mills is dead, it just means the bridge won't be built until the Mills project is built... it's a separate project. No reason to have the bridge until there's a destination on the other side.

I know it's not dead, but I had read in the past that the two projects were going to be developed in tandem. I am assuming now that C Mills is either stalled or --at least, and not surprisingly-- moving very, very slowly.

Pearl Neighbors Frustated by Lack of Progress on The Fields Park

The proposed Fields Park project in the Pearl District has faced a number of obstacles over the last decade. One of the three Parks designed by the River District urban renewal area initiative, run by the Portland Development Commission (PDC), The Fields Park has been held up by everything from disagreements regarding what it should include to a lack of proper funding. Presently, construction on the project has still yet to begin, much to the chagrin of Pearl residents who have been awaiting the park for years.

Looks like bids are finally going out for this! Anyone have any updated renderings?

Too bad that C Mills renovation and a bridge over Naito to the river are dead.

Finally breaking ground.

Portland Parks & Recreation Announces The Fields Groundbreaking Event:

Media, Public Invited to Construction Kickoff Celebration for Portland's Newest City
Park

(Portland, OR) -
Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) will hold a public celebration as construction
begins on the newest city park, The Fields Park in Northwest Portland.
WHEN: Tuesday, March 6, 3:00-4:15 PM
WHERE: NW 10th & Overton

The 3.2-acre park will include a children's area, dog park, large (1 acre) lawn,
sitting areas, strolling paths, picnic tables, landscaping, and a Portland Loo
restroom facility. The Fields is situated within the Hoyt Street Yards portion of
the Pearl District Neighborhood Association (PDNA).

Salem's R&R General Contractors, owned and supervised by Jesse Rodriguez, will build
the park. The project is scheduled for completion in winter of 2013.

Portland Parks Commissioner Nick Fish and PP&R Director Mike Abbaté will speak at
the event. Numerous neighbors, community, and civic leaders are expected to attend.

"We are excited to build this new urban green space, the third in a sequence of
parks in the Pearl District," said Commissioner Fish. "It's a win-win: a new
recreation area for families, and much-needed construction jobs for our community."
Portland Parks & Recreation wants to recognize the project advisory committee
members Keith Thomajin, Patricia Gardner, Lisa Hamilton, Anita Kissee-Wilder,
Catherine Levi, Steve Pinger, Linda Salinsky, Jillian Smith, and Steve Young for
their efforts in seeing the park through the planning process. Special thanks also
go to Tiffany Sweitzer and all area neighbors and stakeholders.

Funding for The Fields park construction is made possible in part via $5,140,000
from the Portland Development Commission, and $400,000 from Portland Parks &
Recreation system development charges (SDCs). SDCs are one time fees assessed for
new development and property user changes. Park SDCs help ensure that Portland's
quality of life keeps pace with our growing and changing city by providing
additional parks and recreation facilities needed to accommodate growth. There is
no general fund money for the construction of the Fields park.........

Winter 2013, meaning more or less 12 months from now? That's good news indeed! I realize the pedestrian bridge isn't being built, but is it still a part of the plan for a possible later addition?

Why do things take so long? Its a park. You should be able to build this in a month.

Well that area is already being used as a park. Its going to be closed and fenced off for a year. Its not like this is cutting edge or anything, its crappy concrete, sod and a boardwalk. To be honest, it might have been better to do this as a "make a park" Just let the neighborhood slowly add features. Its obvious already the dog park is going to be an issue as the dogs now get to run with wild abandon on long stretches of grass. This new design just plops them into a small gravel pen.

There has been a lot of pushing for more dog space to no avail.

I think the delay is because the cost is well over $5 million. Which is crazy, its just a park!

Dog off-leash areas can be a big problem. I live near Laurelhurst Park, and they have to keep rotating the dog off-leash area, as the dogs just totally destroy the ground and turn it into mud. The grass takes a full year to recoup before it grows back.

Wow! How did the price climb so high? That seems nutty. Is the main cost here the land? For the sake of [an outdated] comparison: Pioneer Courthouse Square (from wikipedia)

Quote:
construction required $3 million for land acquisition and $4.3 million for the structures and amenities
