I absolutely agree. Every single "retro" stadium that came out after Camden was pretty much awful. It's nice to see HOK catch up to the European sprots architecture going on, plenty of which is very impressive. Obviously the old ballparks need to be saved (I miss Yankee Stadium already), but if you're building a new one, make it innovative and modern, not more of the usually inaccurate and ugly "retro" look.

Some updated photos of The University of Texas' DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium after the expansion. Official capacity is now 94,113 though as many as 98,621 have watch a Longhorn game there...

Here are San Diego's entrants to the Stadium club:

Qualcomm Stadium is our NFL stadium and home to the Chargers. It is the only stadium in the USA to have hosted the Super Bowl, World Series and the All Star Game.

[/IMG]

PETCO Park is our MLB Stadium and is home to the Padres. It is a gem that has been seemlessly inserted into the surrounding urban neighborhood.

I whole heartedly agree. Take the New Busch Stadium for example, it's so unoriginal that they even named it the same as the old stadium. I hate it. It replaced the old so called cookie cutter stadium that was critisized by the organization and some fans (I don't know who honestly) for being unoriginal and they replaced it with something unoriginal. Which is about par for the course for this ownership group of the Cardinals, but that's for a different forum. lol

What gets me is you go to a game there and the seats are cramped, and if you sit up high you practically need a Sherpa to guide you to your seat the incline is so steep. Then you need a telescope to see the players numbers. Top it off with being totally uninspiring as you walk up to it and well you are in for a crappy ballpark experience.

The old Busch Stadium as "unoriginal" as it may have been had a certain feel to it. You could just catch glimpses of it from blocks away that would start getting you excited and once you got inside you were totally immersed in baseball. You couldn't really see the city outside except for the tops of what few skyscrapers St. Louis has and to me that was pretty cool. For the length of the game you were diverted from the outside world and all that matter was baseball. It was cool.

/rant about Busch Stadium. lol

I just feel shafted, this may have been the one shot in my life for my favorite team to build a new stadium and they cheaped out and followed the crowd. They definitely had a chance to do something special and failed.

^As an outsider (I went to college at Webster in St Louis, but am from AZ) I'd be lying if I said the old Busch compared to the new. The new one is bland, and a bit silly with the overdone retro feel, but that old place was a freakin' dump. The views from the new stadium are terrific and if the ballpark village is ever built it will interact with the surrounding area much better than the old stadium. The old stadium was popular in the hearts of St Louisans because of all the good times they had there, but from a purely 'which is a better building' standpoint, the new building wins by miles.

A question for you, is there any reason they stacked the stadium vertically so tall before finishing off the bowl? This always strikes me as a bit odd when stadiums designers go that route. Is that building at the edge of the open endzone of some historical importance and not to be knocked over? They did they same thing at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, but DKR looks much taller and like if you were in the top row you'd be a zillion feet from the field.

There is a reason actually. For decades, DKR also feature a track which made building up the endzones impractical and resulted in the stadium being built more vertical along the sidelines. The track wasn't removed until the late 90s and when it was, plans started rolling to move the endzones in closer and start building those up.

DKR was built up almost exactly like Washington's Husky Stadium...

http://www.dimensional.net/Pages/projects_husky.htm

DKR as it looked when it first opened in the 20s...

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~txpstcrd/austin.html

In the early 70s, the second deck was added to the West side (the large curved deck)...

http://www.utexas.edu/courses/com314.../imagemap.html

In the late 80s, the athletic center (with football locker rooms, strength center, etc.) was added to the South endzone and an upper deck was added to the East side in '98...

http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/...2.php?g=0&s=10

The next year, the new soccer/track stadium opened across the street and the track was removed from DKR, the field was lowered 7 feet and rows of seating were added along the sidelines...

http://bealonghorn.utexas.edu/whyut/...2.php?g=1&s=12

Starting in '06 I believe, the old horseshoe part of the stadium (which dated back to the 20s I believe) was removed and replaced with the new double-decked facility and a temp. bleacher section was added to the South endzone...

http://www.mackbrown-texasfootball.c...port=m-footbl&

As of right now, the temp. bleachers have been removed and construction is under way on a permanent seating section in the South endzone which supposedly will take seating capacity over 100,000. There is also a rumor that the surface will be replaced with a FieldTurf-like surface this Summer...

http://www.shaggybevo.com/forums/vie...r=asc&start=50

DKR of the future (no timetable set)...

According to Wikipedia, it'll be 50,300. Speaking of Minneapolis, Target Field is being designed by the same people that did PNC Park and AT&T Stadium, so I have high hopes for it.

Speaking of PNC Park, pictures haven't been added to the thread yet, so I'll do so.

Me, I am someone who lives in Florida now but I spent much of my life in the northern Illinois area. I am lucky in that as a kid and an adult I've been in many stadiums, including Wrigley Field, Yankee Stadium, many college football stadiums, United Center, etc.

I'll mention some random ones.

Rockford Metrocentre

DPM2

It's the big arena in my old home area. I've been there many times before. In actuality it's not that great of a building; I mean, yes, it is orange! But, among other things it's where my sisters and I graduated from high school, so for that alone I can't hate on it.

Frontier Field

TwinsMetsFan on Wikimedia

One summer my dad and I were around that area of Western New York, and randomly one night, we decided to see the Rochester Red Wings play a game there. They lost, but it's a really nice stadium.

BankAtlantic Center

The city of Sunrise, Florida's website

I was there this past January. I was randomly in that area of southern Florida for a night and I stayed in the area. I didn't know this before I made the plans, but they had a WWE (wrestling) house show there so I decided it'd be perfect for me to go see one of those for the first time since 2001. The joint was pretty nice; I don't know why they charged 20 bucks to park there, but otherwise it's a place I liked. I sat in the nosebleeds, but by luck it was padded seats and it was right by the luxury boxes. Go figure.

The Pyramid

Exothermic

It's the former home of the Memphis Grizzlies and the Memphis Tigers basketball team. The place was only in use for like a dozen years before they went to FedEx Forum. I agree, the place itself wasn't as great as it looked from the outside, but it looked so great from the outside, it has to be mentioned here. Besides, Spring Break 2003 me and two friends were down in that town for a few days. There was a game between the Grizzlies and the Bulls, and the nosebleed seats were so cheap, we spent one night there. The Bulls got whupped, but it was fun being in such a unique arena.

By the way, I think that Tropicana Field is better than its reputation. I've been there a few times a year since 2004, so I'm not a fair-weather fan of the Rays. The place actually made improvements to stuff like the concourse, opening up many activities, painting it up to make it look interesting, new restaurants, and whatnot. Really, it's better now than it was if you visited it before, like that one person who went there in 2003. It's not exactly Wrigley Field, but I have a good time there.

Current Capacity: 52,593 (Wiki)

Probably the most beautiful sports arena in Philadelphia, and one of the most historic, too. The Eagles won their last world championship here.

The Palestra:

Ah, yes, the Cathedral of College Basketball. Once home to all Big 5 games, many storied games have been played here...given the history of the Big 5.

So I found out recently in this months copy of "Arizona Highways" that the oldest baseball park in the US is in Bisbee, AZ. Its called Warren Ballpark, here it is:

The park was apparently also once used as a jail:

Anyway, its not architecturally amazing or anything, but its historic and neat.
