Wow thanks for posting I never saw that! I would be surprised to see the city allow something so dark since it won't blend into a bland overcast sky

Micro-suites are fairly new to Vancouver, but it looks as if they are going to be a very popular option for cheaper downtown living. There could be an explosion of these types of units in the Oppenheimer district (DTES) as these units will count towards the social housing requirements for that district, plus, as mentioned in the article, they are more profitable.

The DTES is going to be very lively in the coming years.

I love this tower already. Why we couldn't have something like this more in this city? It would enliven the streetscape so much!

Yikes. Neat idea but that dark red cavity looks like some kind of orifice or wound.

Is The tower in the foreground on the right an actual proposal? It's on the site of the community garden I believe. Wasn't there talk years back of a 40 storey there?

This tower looks amazing in my opinion, very un-Vancouver. I would guess though, the city will make them chop the height in half and force them to line the cavity with seafoam spandrel before they are allowed to build it.

I've been looking at this drawing over and over again. If this tower turns out like the drawing, this for me would be a new benchmark for residential tower architecture in Vancouver. Vancouver House seems a bit over rated to me. I hope this tower turns out.

Very much agreed. Now let's see what the city and nimby will do about this.

There must be a view cone cutting across the site to produce the triangular floorplate on the upper floors!

Looks good, but I'll bet the final version is lighter in colour - or maybe 2-tone - like the back of 999 Seymour.

PS - Reaial Insider notes that the Whole Foods is NOT confirmed as a tenant.

Exactly what went through my mind. (really!) I'd rather they did it in orange, or perhaps bright reflective nickel, or bronze, nickel, -whatever- but not war-wound red.
Makes me think of the trauma unit at a hospital...... on second look, the red sculpture in the space seems to be like a stylized heart (?) with the metal tubes as the aorta and coronary arteries and veins.

I think they have taken a lot of artistic liberties with this render. The building next door (the shorter tower of Burrard Place) looks very odd in that rendering. Also the tower on top of the community garden is pure fantasy at this point.

... any others will complain about the black ...
and so it starts... and it will end up being beige.

... ain't it the truth !!! I shouldn't have said anything !!
In fact, I don't mind the red indentation above the retail, it's the one halfway up the building that I find a bit jarring.
Better than solid black, though, and definitely a breakthrough in style for Vancouver.

Love the black, hate the red. Echoing what others have said it looks like a gaping wound. Go with any other colour and I'm on board.

The black on red is what makes it so bold. If the red is taken away, you may as well take away the black as well. That is really the entire point of the design, to make it look like a missing chunk. We dont need more greens and blues. Red and black for the win here.

I'm not saying it isn't cool or shouldn't be built... but damn does it ever look like a gaping wound.
