Glad to hear I think it's a little weird that they have them across the road from each other It would have made more sense to me that the one in the Sobeys building would have closed.

I didn't know where I could talk about this and ask questions so when I found this thread I thought it'd be a good place. I'm a 29 year old man in Southern Ontario, and I'm looking to move to Moncton soon for many reasons but most particularly because of affordable housing, nicer summer weather, clean air, less congestion, and friendly people who have more time to talk and hang out with you.

I know that there are jobs in Moncton particularly in I.T. however my main issue is I'm not a highly skilled worker. I have a degree (psychology B.A.) however my work experience is mainly in hospitality (coffee shop), working at a hospital in the Dietary department during my high school and university years, and some volunteering experience. I have a good downpayment for a house however I'm not sure how the work aspect will be resolved. I talked to a few employment agencies in Moncton and they said for them I have to be there first and I can then go for an interview and maybe they can find something for me.

Can anyone tell me what is the best chance of finding employment in my area of work and if I should apply and get a job before going to Moncton or should I move there and show up and apply in person? I was thinking of just applying and not putting anything about my location on the resume, and if an employer responds I can tell them about my situation but I don't know how they would feel about that.

Also with my work experience do I have a good chance of finding employment in similar but other fields such as retail / sales etc?

I've heard that employers sometimes have difficulty finding people even for low skilled jobs, is that true?

Anyways guys if you have any other advice I'd really appreciate it, and thank s again for your help!
Hey guys, thank you all for the advice and replies to my original post! I'm still in the process of figuring out my move and I'm going to apply to some jobs as well before moving.

If anyone works or knows someone who works in the call centre field or just a customer service field in some way, it'd be great if I can contact them in some way to get to know people in the city, and hopefully get a referral from them for any jobs that are available that I can apply to! As it's a bit difficult at first being new in a city and not knowing anyone, it'd be a great help in hopefully getting my foot in the door! If you guys know anyone I'd really appreciate if I can contact them in some way, thanks!

Move to Saint John, you get history and culture that goes with that, waterfront or ocean views almost anywhere, it's super cheap and you got the best people going

Does Saint John still have the pulp mill in downtown? To avoid fog and fumes I'd choose Moncton.

The pulp mill (which is at Reversing Falls, not uptown) hasn't been a problem since they installed scrubbers about 15 years ago. The air quality in SJ is actually quite good since we get fresh air off the bay - the only exception might be vectors east of the refinery.

At any rate, nowhere in NB is susceptible to the heavy smog advisories of central Canada, which is probably what the poster was referring to.

Being from PEI and living in Sussex and having lived in Moncton, I think Saint John had terrible air quality. Yiu can really smell it. That's basically the main reason I have against Saint John.

Taking a page out of Trumps book? Lol.. we just keep winning and winning, you will get sick of the winning!

I'd like to who came up with the name as well, it seems oddly cocky and that is not what we need as a city.. confidence is great, but acting better than others can be trouble.

I agree. It's fine to be boosterish, but I find this website a little over the top. It could have been done better........

I don't know where the line is drawn between touting one's good points and being an oafish bore, but this website is rather off-putting to me as well. We can do better than that to get our many fine assets as a city across to others.

100% agree. The whole boxing theme with Trump attitude is very much unprofessional.

Well you haven't lived in Saint John, which kind of limits your authority here. I lived there for eight years. There is a huge difference between actual air quality (something that your health depends upon) and a smell. The smell is not really noticeable to anyone who lives there full-time.

Seriously. Anyone who complains about air quality in NB should take a swing down to Southern Ontario sometime in the summer. Smog warnings, high humidity; I bake for the entire summer here in Ottawa. Feels like 30C at midnight is common here

SJ's got some obvious pollutants but it's nowhere near as bad as it was twenty years ago. The best weather upside that SJ has is that it's not nearly as hot as places further in-land throughout the summer...there are days where SJ is routinely 7-10 degrees cooler than Fredericton/Sussex. I managed to escape 35C Ottawa on Canada Day weekend in exchange for 10C SJ. I'd take that year round if I could.

As someone who was raised in the Saint John area and lived there for 30 years, I can confirm that it is 1000x better now than it used to be. We could tell the weather in Hampton by how strong the smell of the pulp mill was blowing in from west SJ. I also lived in an apartment behind the pulp mill 17 years ago. Even then, the smell was only as strong as what we used to get on bad days in Hampton when I was a kid.

That said, now that I have lived in the Moncton area for over 10 years, I can see how someone who has never lived there can consider it really bad. Now it's the refinery that I smell every time we are down there.

No, it's not as polluted as it used to be, nor is it anywhere near as hazardous as a major industrial centre like Toronto. However, when you're not used to smelling anything like that at all, it can seem quite bad.

Just my 2 cents, which rounded off today is $0.

That's the latest rumour. It will either be there, where Day & Ross is or between Kent & Route-15 on Harrisville Bvld. Check the retail thread for updates.

Hi guys,

I have visited Moncton for the 3rd time in my life and was still amazed how you guys are good welcoming people and it also reminded me that so many people from NB are fluent in both languages... it's always fun be be served in french outside of Quebec, especially when travelling with young kids. People switching from english to french or from french to english during conversations, all the time, you only see that in New-Brunswick ! We had a great time !

When I was in Moncton, I noticed a few construction around town, but dont know what they are really except for the Moncton Centre. Can you tell me what is the construction site located downtown with a crane just beside the Alliant Communication tower ?

That's this bad boy, Digit.

I've been around the block a few times myself but always come back to Moncton to make my home. Glad you felt welcome.
