Most people here in Timmins will say "drove" instead of "driven." I'm from a family of teachers and it drives them crazy lol.

Exactly. Back then, MTO rerouted 417 away from Ottawa River from the Split in Ottawa to Hawkesbury precisely because the bank along Ottawa River wasn’t stable.

Along Lake Superior Shore, it seems that the question isn’t whether or not washout happens, but how often.

Then I checked the news and found out it’s actually happening. So far it seems to affect the Michigan side of things badly, but not the Ontario side. At least not yet.

Washouts are more of an issue when you have a company unfamiliar with the terrain do road construction. As far as erosion, it really is a non issue. Even further west of Marathon, the road doesn't get close enough to the lake that erosion would be a serious issue.

However, if we get snowpacks like last winter, then the lake level could rise and it then could be a problem. The Great Lakes are all higher than normal.

Washouts aren't happening because of the lake levels, they're happening because the water levels in the rivers get too high during heavy rains or snow melt and the bridges or culverts aren't adequate for the water volume.

But it really has nothing to do with the lake. We don't have waves on lake Superior washing the road out at any location on the lake. It's always culverts and bridges over swollen rivers.

It seems that Highway 11-17 is closed in both directions between 5th Road and Superior Shore Road. There is actually no detour...

There is a possible detour through logging roads, but that's a 50km or so detour and the roads might not be passable.

It's now open to 1 lane alternating traffic, so there is traffic flow.

I just got through this. Had to exain to few couples waiting on the side of the road that there is no side road or alternate route to take. Eastbound at Pearl is a cellular dead spot too so they were getting frustrated that their phones weren't working either. Pearl River to Ouimet Canyon Rd is one big choke point in the system.

This accident was about half a km from the New Year's Eve accident in 2017. Also would have not probably happened if the twinning hadn't have been cancelled/delayed as this was firmly inside the boundaries of where blasting and rock removal would be on-going.

Very sad.

I drove that section a few days ago. Nice to see the 4 laned sections but frustrating that it won't be completed soon.

If they’re southern Ontarians, now they know the pain of their northwestern neighbours.

I've driven Highway 7 between Guelph and Kitchener during rush hour so I understand their position on which highway should be twinned, but in their case, there is an alternate route.

We don't have that.

Even if it's twinned one lane roads, we need some kind of duplication to prevent totally cutting off parts of this region.

For Highway 7, sometimes I wonder why people don’t go on the country road to its north. Then again, I don’t drive on it during rush hour often enough to know. As for your second point, that’s why I added service roads to my designs/proposals.
As you may remember, I drew out how 17 should be twinned from turnoff to Joseph Island to Nairn Centre, from Markstay to North Bay, then from Rolphton to Cobden, and also west of Kenora. The parts between SSM and Ottawa that I didn’t draw were already covered by MTO. Redesigning many portions of it (see #789 on page 40 by swimmer_spe) will be quite the work though...

I think they also drive on that road, there is a lot of interaction between Kitchener/Waterloo and Guelph. I always wondered why all of Guelph's industry was in the northwest corner of the city, and it's obvious now: a lot of people from KW work in that part of Guelph.

The road was literally bumper to bumper traffic from Kitchener into Guelph at 8:30am. It was moving steady at around 50km/h, but the road was clearly at capacity. It's a rare instance where adding lanes would probably actually help. But you can see how an accident can paralyze that area too; if a collision occurred and blocked Highway 7, the process of turning vehicles around and detouring them would be long and difficult.

But that's the thing: they can detour. In our case, a major accident on the highway means turn your car off and build a tent, it might be a day or two before you can travel again. The detour last night was essentially an 18 hour trip through the United States, and includes a toll road.

Would it have been worth it to go offroad to go around the accident scene?

I probably asked a question that wasn’t meant to be taken seriously, so better question:

The parts where TCH’s the only way between western and eastern Canada get closed every now and then, as can be seen from local news and from OPP Communications NWR’s tweets, but why is the failure of Nipigon Bridge the only one that garnered attention? When will the days come when media question why eastern and western Canada aren’t well connected, as Loco101 said?

This is proof to my of why I hate twinning. If thy instead build a new divided 4 lane highway and cris cross the old highway then you have a detour route when something inevitably happens.

Twinning is the cheaper option, so they do it.
