I've also just come across renders of the new waterlot/marina adjacent to the VCEC. These are from the MCM Partnership site (the pages of which seem pretty new, considering the placeholder Lorem Ipsum text...)

The first 2 renders don't look that bad......

I like the floatplanes on the westside, but not the powerboats on the east... I have vivid images of a cruise-ship engine failure ala BC ferries...

Must they really have a marina there? Fine, have the seaplane terminal there but why another marina?

There was always a marina there after the CP Ferry (maybe even before?). My friend was kicked out of there and had to wait over a year to get a space at an ultra-expensive marina (he lives on his boat). So, yes, marinas are desperately needed...especially for people living on their boat.

^ I think the marina is great. The more animated the harbour and the waterfront the better IMO.

---------------

Thought this was an interesting bit of news, considering the discussion on here about the need for a civic plaza in which to gather, and whether the Convention Centre would successfully draw crowds and go towards fulfilling that role:

Hundreds rally across Canada to protest Iran's election results
By Pat Hewitt, The Canadian Press
ADVERTISEMENT

TORONTO - Hundreds of Iranian-Canadians and their supporters turned out across the country Sunday to protest the Iranian election result that saw hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad declared the winner over his reformist rival Mir Hossein Mousavi.

...

In Vancouver, a few hundred people rallied outside the city's convention centre in a protest that, at times, turned ugly.

Supporters of Mousavi clashed with those calling for an end to Islamic rule in Iran. Protestors on both sides exchanged heated words and tore at Iranian flags.

I'm still saying without a marina would be much better.

As for the protests, it's now our new art gallery.

It's unfortunate that there was some tension at that rally but I'm glad to hear the new space there is getting some use already.

I was down at the convention centre this evening. Two developments of note:
1) On the west side where the seawall meets the stairs going up to the convention centre, the small path nearest Harbour Green 2 is now complete and a small garden commemorating some guy responsible for developing that area is in among the flowers.

2) The planting continues up the steep west slope, and now some long, rectangular metal fixtures have been installed going up that slope--probably about ten of them--could these be part of some lighting feature? If so, it would be quite dramatic when viewed from the seawall or Stanley Park. Too early to tell though. Might just have something to do with the planting.

The marina would work well in conjunction with harbour tours for conventioneers.
I don't know whether it is more of a public marina/dock or if it is solely for private boats. I would think that it would have more of a public function than a private function because of its location.

Does anyone know?

Nice find, Vanman. I quite like the area at night. It probably has the highest concentration of interesting lighting in the city (outside the Granville strip). I also like how transparent the building becomes at night. It really shows off its nice warm, wood interior.

I think it was just part of their opening festivities, just sort of showing off the sorts of things they can do to add interest when certain conventions are in town. That's my take anyways.
