How so? It's a good way to get around especially with my kids who I don't want riding on the roads. There's very few places I can ride with my kids in West Kelowna in comparison.

Is that your Burgman 650 in your avatar?

Separating bikes from cars is the best way to keep everyone safe.

^Obviously but I don't believe designated bike lanes are the way to do it unless they are separated by something because in my experience cyclists riding in the bike lane actually ride closer to traffic than they would otherwise before bike lanes were put down. Before, they would ride much closer to the curb but the bike lanes are between the parking lane and the traffic lane which actually makes them more perilous. If there are stats showing otherwise though, i'd like to see them because in my experience bike lanes have actually brought traffic and cyclists closer together.

Bicycles were invented before cars, so they are a regressive form of transportation, not progressive, the evidence of which is in the subsequent popularity of cars over bicycles. That war was won a long time ago regardless of your family's preferences.

Yes, it is my burgman 650 in my avatar. Why do you ask?

Smh. Walking was invented before bicycles. Does that make walking regressive?

That's why the separated bike paths Kelowna wants to build are great, like the photo I posted. Kids are safe from traffic, except where we have to cross roads of course.

I have a Vino 125. I know some Burgman 650 owners. Good way to get around town. You must be shocked having previously perceived me as some tree hugger though. Aren't motorcycles and scooters technically regressive modes of transport too?

Of course walking is regressive, in fact on the evolutionary scale, it's right up there with single-celled amoebas so why you were shaking your head I can't imagine. Given the choice of a short drive or a long walk, which would you choose?

A Vino 125 regressive? Absolutely. Firstly, for the same insurance you could get a 400cc bike or scooter so you're paying extra for a whole lot of nothing. Secondly, from what i've heard the Vino 125 is about the slowest 125cc machine ever made because unlike yourself I can ride coast to coast on mine since it's a motorcycle pretending to be a scooter. You're right about me perceiving you as a progressive (such an ironic term) though. I just saw your pics and as long as they aren't taking any traffic lanes away then those bike lanes look great, much better than the painted bike lanes we have in Victoria that always take away a lane of traffic and replace them with a painted cycle lane putting traffic and cyclists perilously close together

You may have heard it from me on one of the bike forums. Compared to my old CBR 125R which could maintain a good 110 km/h, there's no power in the Vino 125. But it was dirt cheap (because nobody wants them) and it's good enough for commuting. I may have even taken it to Kamloops once... I'm not letting myself get a real bike until I buy a house though. I've been tempted by some good deals on a Majesty or Burgman 400 a couple of times but it's going to set back my house buying ambitions a little and I ultimately want something like a V-Strom 650 so it's going to be a hassle trying to sell another bike.

I'm not a fan of painted bike lanes for my kids. Obviously the separated bike paths cost more to build.

Maybe it was from you that I heard about how gutless the Vino 125 is because although the interweb is a big place if you really went out of your way to tell everyone you could on every forum how slow it is, it might have been you after all. You seriously rode to Kamloops on it?

It was a joke...

Yes I did, that was super fun. I was able to do the 90 km/h speed limit on flat ground, slowed down a bit going uphill. Only one driver appeared to have an issue with my presence on the road, all the sport bikes, dual sports, adventure, and tourers waved to me. Only a couple of the Harley riders waved back though, snobs...

I obviously don't get the joke. Why would you lie on an internet forum about your scooter being slow?

It was a joke about how you heard it from me. You could've heard it from anyone.

I've never bashed your scooter, why do you feel the need to bash mine?

I've never had so many problems communicating with another human being, where are you from?

I never bashed your scooter (if that's even a serious question, but who knows?).

It's like you go back and forth between joking and serious in a most schizophrenic way that is supremely confusing.

I was mostly being light at first. We're scooter riders, we should be in this together right? You commented my scooter was regressive. I shrugged it off and tried joking about it by saying maybe you heard it from me.

When you asked "why would you lie about your scooter being slow?" I was thinking to myself all my attempts to be light and friendly with you, you seemed insistent to continue to put me down. So I stopped being light and became serious.

My motorcycles and scooters being regressive comment is just as per your definition that anything that was invented before the automobile and not a widespread transportation method is regressive. Heck, I think more people ride their bicycles to work than ride a scooter/motorcycle to work. But I could care less what most people think, I still think motorcycling is the best way to get around anywhere, period.

Honestly, I don't know why we're bickering so much. I don't have a problem with you. If you don't have a problem with me then we can call it truce.

I didn't insult you, I said your scooter is lame because it's in the same insurance bracket as a 400cc motorbike/scooter with about a third the power and I can assure you I can carry a lot more shit in mine. Your scooter is just that-a scooter, whereas my scooter is a motorbike pretending to be a scooter so they are completely different although you're right about the most important thing-we're both riders and if given the chance, i'd happily jump on your Vino and go for a ride. I like all two-wheeled machines.

An update on the empty lot across from the new Castanet building which is starting construction:

Quote:
The City of Kelowna expects to make a small profit when it flips a downtown property it purchased four years ago.

The city parking lot at the corner of Ellis Street and Lawrence Avenue is up for sale.

The asking price is $2.35 million. In 2012, the city purchased the property, which formerly housed Henderson Cleaners, for $1.7 million.

The city hopes a developer will purchase the property for a residential, mixed-use development.

“With the addition of the Kelowna Community Health Services Centre, Okanagan Centre for Innovation, Kelowna Yacht Club and more than $20 million in investment in parking, public spaces and transportation infrastructure over the last five years, the successful strategic disposition of these properties will continue to achieve the goals of attracting people, increasing vibrancy and building on the economy of our city,” said strategic land development manager Graham Hood.

“Enabling residential growth downtown will allow for easy access to transit, services and other amenities and less reliance on vehicles.”

Increased density is anticipated on the Ellis Street properties as outlined within the Downtown Plan.

The majority of investment in the downtown has been through commercial and institutional office projects in the last five years and the lot on Ellis Street will support the ongoing revitalization of the downtown.

Commercial space at the ground floor would contribute to the active street life envisioned for the downtown.

City council will have the final say on any sale.

There is also a new 6 storey building proposed for the empty lot on Lakeshore across from Gyro (next to former Caban site)

I didn't see this posted here.

It's now called 1151 Sunset

Steve MacNaull

First, it was called Lucaya.

Then Grace.

And, finally, 1151 Sunset Drive after its address in Kelowna’s north downtown, across from Prospera Place.

It’s the 21-storey oft-delayed condominium tower that looks like construction will finally start next month for fall 2018 completion.

The saga of this highrise began in 2007 when Kelowna was booming and a Calgary firm started marketing a tower with 92 luxury suites. Pre-sales went well and the underground parking and foundation was constructed. Then the 2008 recession hit, construction halted and the project fell into receivership. In 2012, Jingon of Richmond, which has Chinese ownership, bought the property out of receivership for $3.8 million and announced it would build Grace. There would be more and smaller suites, 155 in all, to make the project viable.

Some good news there. Is there any news about the hotel tower?
