I couldn't agree more. It would also reduce the "drop off" (waste, scrap). Forty foot lengths are a standard in the US. I strongly suspect they are using 60 footers (also a standard length) and are getting two 26' 4" columns out of each one, but that still leaves 7' 4" of drop off.
PS: A standard length beam from the mill is usually an inch or two over so there would be enough length for milling the ends. (Column ends are milled to within a few thousandths of an inch of square to ensure full bearing.)
