Nope, but what little snow there was just smoothly compacted on the road and basically turned to ice. I just slid trying to go up a hill beside my place that is usually no problem for my vehicle (old school 4wd and snow tires).

While the rest of Western Canada is dealing with -30 to -45 all the Vancouver posters come out of woodwork excited for -5.

Snowy, blowy and cold. Actually, the morning wasn't too bad but then around lunch time the temperature plummeted and the blizzard began.

Thursday's high at Vancouver Harbour was 5 C, the low was -6 C.

Like madog222 said, nope.
But I also didn't see any salt, sand or gravel.

It's comfortably above freezing finally. First slip-free walk to the gym in a while.

Edit: it's mild, it's Friday. Fuck yeah, baby, it's a great day!

Where are you getting -5 from? The forecast is -12 with a minus -20 windchill on top of that. That's fricken cold anywhere in Canada. Obviously not as cold as the rest Western Canada but lots not skew the actual conditions.

Absolutely fascinating what it's going on in North America though. Some places in the southern US are going from +20C to under -10C in the span of a day or 2. That map of the Great Lakes blocking the cold is just outrageous also. Just stopping it dead in its tracks. It's still going to get damn cold though, just not to the same extent, highs of -7 and lows of -12. Actually similar to what Vancouver/Victoria are getting, same thing going on there with the ocean blocking some of the cold.

The next few nights will likely be the coldest temperatures I've experienced in my lifetime. The last time Calgary or Edmonton had daily highs that didn't get above -30 was 2004.
Huh? Edmonton gets to around -40C (not including windchill) most years. I lived there briefly between 2008 and 2012 and each one of those years went down to -40C (without windchill). I'll never forget living in Millwoods in 2009 and reading the temperature was a crazy -48C without windchill. Regardless if it was at the airport or not, it's still cold.

It's like a day next spring. Strong sun and actually warm.

All that cold is on its way, though, I'm sure. Hopefully weakens enough to not get us below -10

Snow covered palm trees in Vancouver. This perfectly encapsulates the schizophrenic personality of British California.

Currently -6C in Moncton at 9 AM and sunny. Storm #3 arrives tomorrow afternoon, and will be a clone of storm #2 with snow, rain and strong winds. We're only expecting about 5 cm here before the transition.

Curiously, there is a storm #4 expected by the middle of next week. Usually the conveyor belt peters out after three nor'easters, but, the storm track is following the jet stream along the lower edge of the polar vortex currently ensconced over continental North America, and, until the vortex budges, the freight train of storms will likely continue for us.

Mix of sun and cloud and 4 degrees at just before 11am. The envy of many, even if just for a few days.

-36 with -45WC here in Canmore. Most ski hills are closed.

Tomorrow they are saying we may hit a -50WC.

I am thinking of going to BBQ at our apartment communal outside pit with a sombrero.

-12c right now in Vancouver. We'll hit a high of -8c today. Pretty brutal.

The alley hill behind my apartment is pure ice. Even with 4wd and snow tires, it's almost impassable, and it's the only way in or out of my parkade. There's no way I'm taking my car out today.

I was in Surrey last night and there was no snow, no signs of snow, and sidewalks, roads, and cars were all bare. Burnaby and Coquitlam were ice and snow.

If you're in the western parts of Metro Vancouver, stay home. I can't imagine it'll be much better today. Besides the main thoroughfares, every street is a sheet of ice.

This prompted me to look it up and was surprised to find that Nashville's record low for January is -27. That's way lower than I thought.

It's interesting to see how much the relatively warm great lakes are moderating the cold snap in my neck of the woods. Even with that though, we could flirt with a -20 low at the peak.

Looks like by around the 23rd - 24th, Southern Ontario will be back to above normal. I still expect this winter overall in most of Canada to be warmer than average, despite this pretty insane cold event.

Okay...well those are the statistics and published weather records that also align with what the meteorologists are finding in the data... but sure, I guss if you know better.
