That isn't exactly true though. You need to look at the traffic on both sides of the Perimeter. Currently there is limited traffic continuing west on Wilkes past the Perimeter. With the waste treatment plant and mostly farmland on Wilkes there would seem to be limited need for four lanes west of the Perimeter. Sure if you were otherwise doing a rebuild there you might plan for four lanes on Wilkes but even taking the Perimeter from 4 to 6 lanes there is a long term vision so it simply isn't going to happen.

I was just meaning you need to provide 4 lanes up to the bridge. The 4 lanes wouldn't continue on past that. It would end up something like the Concordia Overpass on Lagimodiere. Actually, exactly like that. Perfect example. Concordia drops to 2 lanes on the east side of the bridge. For now anyways.

The redesign of the Wilkes intersection just east of the Perimeter for the new residential development seems to be about as far west as four lanes would be needed. Perhaps do some extra rework to allow a better separation of lanes and a storage (turning) lane for west to north traffic. If you are doing that it would likely merit doing something similar to west to south traffic as well and building longer merges for traffic entering the east flow. That could all be accomplished without needing four lanes of traffic under the Perimeter which would be extremely pricey as it would effectively need to demo the earth under the existing bridge on the south side and move it over of the new Wilkes lanes.

One of many "my dirt road access to what should be a freeway is getting shut down" complainers in the news today

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/loc...418409573.html

More of these "growing pain" will pop up if we move towards properly designed highways

Look who is complaining the same clowns from Brokenhead that didn't want highway 59 twinned through their reserve. Maybe these clowns should have came out to one of the 59/Perimeter open houses they held five years ago!

Those guys were involved in the whole process. Their land was noted on all the studies. Actually, their land was/is going to be partially purchased for the future bridge at Birds Hill Road. Bunch of hog wash.

"Safety is a shared concern," Bear said. "If It's a safety hazard, we'd like to see what it's based on."

Um, people dieing. Funny how this happens in Manitoba where we have no freeways. People don't understand.

From memory, the access road they are talking about is just north of the old weigh scale and has long been in the high speed (100 km/h) section of the highway.

An "in only" entrance from the north bound flow would seem to be reasonable assuming it had a proper length to the exit lane and that Brokenhead picked up the related costs.

Ya. The Province is closing the McGregor Farm Road/Pritchard Farm Rd access point, which was just north of the old weigh scale. I get their point, but they've been involved forever haha.

A right in/out may be a solution for them. I'll bet the Province will say no. They are eliminating access points. There are also standards for highways or freeways on amount of access point per mile. As in no access points within 1 mile of each other. Thats an approx distance. These access points should also be grade separated. If you look at interstates, its usually minimum 2 miles between access.

That stretch of Lagimodiere from 101 to Birds Hill has way too many access points for such a busy highway. I'm glad the province is dialling it back a bit.

If you look at it, a couple of years ago Wal-Mart wanted in on the parcel on the SW corner of the 59 & 101 interchange and the Province denied them access. It should be a quick "NO" answer and done for this group.

Actually Walmart is going into the Meadows golf course site, it's the farewell season for Meadows golf course.

Really? How will access work? Seems like an awkward spot.

I heard that it was residential going in there, nothing about a Walmart. Plus its just an awkward location to get to, so I highly doubt Walmart would build there.

Access via signals at Birds Hill Road. Really should have diamond here. Missed opportunity.

Closing Pritchard Farm Road long overdue.

Not much residential going forward in ESP these days. Pretty saturated. RM wants slow and steady.

The Province would never make Wilkes four lanes west of the Perimeter. That would make no sense at all. Not enough traffic.

Residential is ESP is slowly moving along, like was mentioned.
-There's the stuff inside the Perimeter.
-Southland Drive phase expansion.
-Then the Whidby Harbour thing that is slow going. Basically there's a road that runs along the river that is slowly expanding.
-There's a small development in the northwest quadrant of the 101/59 interchange.
-The rest is smaller 'infill' type stuff.

Until Fahr land goes ahead (if ever), or whatever is happening with Meadows, there aren't many major projects on the go. Wal-mart going in the meadows seems like an equally bad location as the other spot. But at least they'd have a chance to connect to the highways via Wenzel, either north or south. The diamond at Birds Hill should be going in now, but hopefully will be part of whatever developments go in there, including the Brokenhead lands. Their best bet for a gas bar would be at the Birds Hill Rd/Wenzel and 59 interchange.

With the passing of Jonathon Fahr last year, I don't know if that development will move forward. Very tragic.

The new lights on the Perimeter between Portage and Roblin are on now and the older median poles have been removed. One oddity is the new lights were installed in such a way that expanding the road to six lanes would require removing the newly installed lights. Also not sure why they needed to replace the fixtures to upgrade to LED lights.

The South Perimeter upgrade project should go out to Functional Design this year. Nice to hear that this project is a priority for the new PC Government.

That is fantastic news Biff! What is the next step after completion of functional design? Request for bids?
