When I had a big truck back in the day (high school & college), I simply got used to backing into spots - and it did become natural. Backing out with that thing was a pain because people aren't typically considerate - or patient - so I always wanted to pull straight out when leaving a spot.

Then I got a Honda Accord for better gas mileage. Saved a ton, but honestly felt like I lost my man card...and now I drive a minivan/suv crossover...so....

I was searching through some old photos of mine and found these shots I took over downtown from an American Airlines flight in Oct 2006. The changes in the W and SW ends of downtown have been dramatic.

I remember that thread Mopacs. It was wonderful! For anyone not around back then, here is the whole thread in all it's glory.

Well that was a blast from my own past! First time I've seen the post in years. The views from that flight were amazing.

That thread is an excellent photo documentary of the "Great Skyscraper Boom" in its infancy. I consider the pre-recession boom to be the beginning of the current boom. That pesky two or so year recession only delayed construction as many of the current projects were conceived around that time.

It is amazing to see how much has changed since 2006. Frost was so lonely...Green Water still had green water...the west end wasn't much at all...crazy. Lake Travis looks a bit low in the photos, but remember in 2007 the Marble Falls area had the massive flood that filled Lake Travis up completely and then some.

Here is a short drone video showing the Memorial Day flooding around Austin, including Seaholm/Northshore, the Stevie Ray Vaughn Statue, Lamar at Shoal Creek and Ladybird Lake. Sorry it's just a link, I couldn't get the embedding thing to work.

Thanks for posting that video. Does anyone know how well the "new" Waller Creek handled all of the rain?

I wondered the same. Local news were very focused on Shoal Creek but no mention of Waller. Maybe that meant nothing to report?

At Easy Tiger, there were floodwaters at the side patio, but not the rear patio. So lots of water still.

That doesn't look like the flood control tunnel is working.

Some reports are starting to say the problem is that Ladybird Lake gets full, and the water can't drain into it -- even if the drainage system is working fine, when it hits the lake it's like a wall. And Ladybird lake can't drain itself downstream fast enough; even with all floodgates open at Longhorn Dam, to where the water is level on both sides, there just isn't enough flow downstream.

So we fixed one problem only to find another farther down in the system. At least that's the early speculation.

Sort of reminds me of the photos of the big floods back before they built the dams on the Colorado.

How bad is this problem? Does it potentially still work in a more localized flood setting? I.E. if Waller is flooding but nothing upstream from it? Or will it also work in flood situations throughout the region which are simply less severe?

A potential fix to this is to provide simply a damn of Waller at the creek with a small overflow of potentially 10 feet, so that even if the river is rising Waller can still drain.
