You've been reading a bit too much into this thread here!

Not enough sleep, maybe? Or even the SADS (Seasonal Affective Disorder Syndrome) getting to you?

No. Just very concerned that everyone seems to have drunk the "DREAM:BIG" cool-aid. Looks like E-towners have been brainwashed by the "dream but don't expect" no-so-subliminal message p!ssed on the walls of Hall D.

I'm sure this will further polarize any debate, but here is a quick sketch of the quarters in its potential (not certain) site. From this distant vantage point, it's hard to recognize the feel of the neighborhood, but it looks like it will nicely complement the Altavista towers. I think that from the ground, it will seem much more non-contextual. But the massing is not that bad. I assume the curve is so that half the units don't face (or feel like they face) the parkade. Just so I don't sound too cynical, I do think that the Robbins Health Learning building continues to look very promising.

What's the @b0rt!0n to the right of the proposal? What's Edmonton trying to do? Honour its Central and East European roots?

I hope to all things sacred that this is not the location. This area is NOT ready for that type of development, and I should know, I work across on 108th street. Way too much industrial in this area, hell, they have an old tire storage yard about 1 block west, behind said abort!on

On an unrelated note, I am thinking of buying a unit in Jasper Properties to live in. Has anyone heard anything good/bad about the building.

Also price is around $355k for 1200 sq/ft but it is a one bedroom and den-2 washrooms.

What do you guys think?

I think I would rather live west of downtown right now, then east.

Now, buying that condo as an investment would be a good idea. The value should only increase, and increase substainally in the next few years, especially as Jasper East/Downtown East Re-vitalization happens.

That would be the back of the residences at GMAC.

I'd like to weigh in on 'the Quarters.'

First of all, any of you that complained about the Venetian should be up in arms over this. These kinds of projects are ridiculous in etown. Someone refered to all of the historic buildings that were torn down in Edmonton looked like this - that's not true. The buildings like the Mcleod (still standing), Teglar etc. are from the Chicago School style not some Parisian rip off.

We live in the prairies, we live in a modern city that has very few structures left from the 1800's - our architecture should reflect that - not some nod to Europa Blvd. at WEM.

Quarters is a good design and should not even be in the same book as Venothing. Placement is key for it and it COULD work in Edmonton....but not behind GMAC.

As for that 1200sqft condo....thats a really good price these days and killer views likely. Although East is not as good as west IMO, it wont go down....and once east jasper goes up, that whole 95st-82st will o nothing but improve. I expect a lot of tearing down and going up along jasper in that area.

i say good. However, you cant really walk to downtown or walk around all that much.

Thats my take on it.

The whole point for me living in a condo is to be able to walk everywhere and have everything I need within walking distance. East Jasper will come around...just not in the next five years.

I wish Arnie and Vinterra would up the ante and do a killer brick and slanted roof, perhaps copper even, central park west look 30 storey tower downtown in the core.

Twin Brooks residents pan housing plan
Say land needed for school, not affordable homes
Gordon Kent, The Edmonton Journal
Published: Monday, December 11, 2006
EDMONTON - Some angry Twin Brooks residents have started a campaign to convince the city to call off plans to sell the vacant school site in their area for affordable starter homes.

They're holding a public meeting with ward councillors tonight to make the case that the plan, given tentative approval two weeks ago, will create traffic problems, overcrowd the existing school, take away much-needed soccer fields and won't be suitable for the upscale neighbourhood.

"We could actually use another school -- never mind row-housing, up to possibly 50 condos, and possibly 100 more kids," Twin Brooks Community League president Sandy Tarnowski said Sunday.

Font: ****"Where are they going to go to school?" Under a deal reached last month by the city, local school districts and the province, 20 pieces of vacant land around Edmonton originally slated for schools will be used instead for condo and townhouse developments.

The proposal could create up to 1,000 new housing units for first-time home buyers, with construction expected to start in 2008 at three to five locations.

Neighbourhoods will get a say in the configuration of individual projects, traffic impacts and other factors to ensure the new structures are compatible with existing homes.

Tarnowski and other people in southwest Edmonton are unhappy they were not consulted on the project.

"There are a lot of upset people regarding the process," said Sandra Crawford, president of the South West Area Council, an umbrella organization for 17 community leagues.

"We were informed that our communities were going to change. We had no say." Coun. Bryan Anderson initially supported the zoning changes needed to implement the housing scheme, but said he will oppose them when the matter returns to council Tuesday for a final vote.

While he still likes the concept of using the land for housing, he wants to hold a hearing where people can indicate which locations they want included.

Mayor Stephen Mandel, councillors and other officials feared such discussions for each site could take years, creating problems if current cabinet ministers who favour the proposal are replaced, Anderson said.

"If the project has as much validity as we think it does, then conceivably it will stand on its own merits no matter who is the minister," he said.

"Would a six-month or a year delay make the project any less beneficial? I don't think so." However, Homesteader Community League president Angie Eleniak said her northeast district has volunteered to have land at Canon Ridge be among the first sections of the city to get one of the developments.

While initially wary, they have concluded the scheme is going ahead, and following a meeting attended by Mandel, city officials and community league executives on Nov. 30, are interested in taking part, she said.

Many other people at the meeting took a "not in my backyard" approach, Eleniak said.

"I'm a first-time homeowner ... . I'm sorry they looked at the dregs of society being the ones who would buy these homes," she said. "We're more than willing to be one of the project sites ... we want to prove the process can work." [email protected]

Three sites possible for remand centre
New provincial cabinet will make decision
Jeff Holubitsky, The Edmonton Journal
Published: Monday, December 11, 2006
EDMONTON - The province has narrowed its search for a location for Edmonton's promised new remand centre to three potential sites, a local MLA says.

One site is near Alberta Hospital in the northeast, one is near the Young Offenders Centre north of Castle Downs and one is adjacent to the current downtown facility at 9660 104th Ave., Edmonton-Castle Downs MLA Thomas Lukaszuk said Sunday.

No decision has been made, he said.

Font: ****Before the site can be chosen it must be approved by the provincial cabinet, to be named by premier-designate Ed Stelmach after he is sworn in later this week.

"All the studies and sites, and pros and cons, have been looked at so we have all of the empirical data; all we have to do is make a ruling," Lukaszuk said.

Though Lukaszuk talked of three potential sites, Andy Weiler, a spokesman for the Alberta Solicitor General, said the province is also considering a site in Fort Saskatchewan.

Lukaszuk expects a decision to be made in the near future.

"We need that remand centre because judges have started dispensing significantly lowered sentences to our criminals because of the fact that the current remand is so overcrowded," he said.

The province announced in July it had set aside $308 million to build a 2,000-bed replacement for the facility.

At the time, the plans were welcomed by Mayor Stephen Mandel and representatives of the John Howard Society and the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees, which represents guards.

When it opened in 1979, the centre was intended to hold 338 people but has housed as many as 750 in cells often shared by two to three inmates.

The centre, which holds inmates who have been charged with crimes but not convicted, has faced mounting criticism because of the pressures created by mixing first-time offenders with repeat, often violent criminals.

Construction of the new centre would likely begin next year.

Lukaszuk said public safety is not an issue in picking the new site, because high security measures make escape extremely unlikely.

"In Alberta, we haven't had an escape from a remand centre yet," he said. "When escapes occurred, they always occurred at the courthouse.

"Risk is not a factor at all because these prisoners are transferred into vehicles in a parkade within the centre and then they are simply transported to court." He said the new centre will likely not be more than four storeys high.

"From the outside you would not know it is a remand centre, just like the one downtown," he said.
