I am confused by this as well. The equinox building is already complete (with the exception of the interior) as of last month. If they are taking it over, I can't imagine how a TI for that space would take 12-18 months?

It is taking over that newly built space originally for Equinox (deal fell through), but the interior is just a shell at this point and the building needs modifications on the roof for LTF Beach Club.

Scottsdale is really not forward thinking, the areas in "Scottsdale" Booming th most are not even Scottsdale, they are Phoenix and the reservation.

In the last couple of decades Scottsdale went from being pretty much the only place to find a nice restaurant and nightlife amenities in the region to being one of three (Tempe and Downtown being just as big if not bigger for nightlife now)

So the city council makes a thoroughly predictable "no" vote and we're going to say they're shooting themselves in the foot?

I've seen this episode over and over on this site. Scottsdale doesn't want it.

Maybe when the Gentry project is built on the west side of the wash....then maybe the City will be more eager to redevelop more sites around the wash....They could really make the wash eventually like the Katy Trail in Dallas or that other trail in Hotlanta...

They're still going to get it built, just with 20 or so less units. Are those 20 units worth the additional blow to Scottsdale's credibility with developers? Doubtful

Eventually these idiots will be out of office and Scottsdale will experience a wave of great developments.

Why are you taking the Scottsdale City Council's wishes so personally? Most people I know who live in Scottsdale are on the same side with the Council, they didn't move to Scottsdale to be surrounded by high (or even medium) density development.

Just because they don't think the way you want doesn't make them idiots. They just have a different set of priorities which have been evident for decades.

Opponents insist they are not against rejuvenating the plaza, but many are demanding commercial-only elements with a retail focus. This insistence comes despite the fact that Scottsdale is the Valley community most over-served by retail. Data from CoStar/ESRI show Scottsdale as having a retail per capita ratio of 90.1SF. Tempe is a distant second at 69.6SF.
Good article with a couple snippets at how dumb and irrational the opponents are.

It's "overserved" because Scottsdale attracts people across the Valley, State, Country and beyond to come and spend money there. I don't know if that gauge accurately reflects the fact that tourist destinations are more often over reliant on retail development.

I run a business in the area where we see 1000+ customers a day (neighborhood residents, commuters, employees of other nearby businesses and offices) … not a single person I’ve talked to has said they didn’t want this to happen. There’s apartments going up all over the area, and this retail plaza is a dead zone. On a busy day the surface parking lot is 10% full.

Everyone I’ve talked to that has gone to the development meetings has voiced their support, can’t believe it’s being held up over 20 units.

Can’t wait to see that plaza gone.

I love how all these people are arguing against density because of water scarcity and the heat island effect yet have no problem bulldozing natural desert to waste even more water and resources on low density housing that will also increase the heat island effect three fold with even more pavement than a high density mid/high-rise on a much smaller footprint.

New Independent and assisted living residential project planned at Scottsdale Rd and Osborn just south of Old town. Will be taking over the Olive Garden lot that's next to the Carter. It looks like a high quality design by the exterior renderings.
