A simple lifting hoist that rolls around on dollies, on an unfinished 20th floor, with it's head poking out one of these openings, would work fine. They send the cable down to the ground, attach a panel and winch it up to the level where the installers are working. Seems to be an elegant solution to me.

The base is to be left open to the elements for another year, so why not the 20th floor?

I said it was just a theory.
Sounds reasonable to me.

Wow... I guess we're more isolated in Canada than I thought! While I was reading this fascinating thread, I discovered I wasn't the only Canadian who was totally oblivious to the One World Trade Center project... Guess our journalists are too busy covering hockey and curling Anyway, thanks for getting us Canucks in the know, and for all the great pictures! This is a thread I will be watching closely from now on!

Well, thanks to all for the insight, and awesome pictures. When is the projected date of completion? I have read in this thread anywhere from 2013 to 2018.

I think most Americans who aren't skyscraper geeks and who haven't visited the site don't realize that a building called the WTC is under construction and is already taller than anything in their city (OK, a huge generalization).

Anyway, I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge last night, in the snow, and it was great to see this tower rising on the other side of downtown. It was also the first time I've seen Beekman up close, despite having lived here for a month and having visited the city several times since it's been u/c. I'm not a huge Ghery fan. The Disney Hall in LA is cool, but I hate that thing in Seattle, and generally his buildings get less interesting the more I see them. But, Beekman is going to be my favorite of his buildings by far. It's distinctively Ghery, but at the same time a "normal" skyscraper in that its function doesn't seem to be compromised by its shape.

It is indeed a treat. More info and discussion on Beekman here...

Meanwhile, when this tower starts poking above the Downtown skyline next year (a matter of months really), people all over the City and surrounding areas will be just as amazed how far things have come along.

Yes, as a person who had no idea of the project, it was so interesting to go through the tread, and see the progress since the beginning to now. I had always hoped America would build something bigger and better than what was there, as both a tribute to American strength, and their ability to rise above the terrible crimes committed against all democratic nations, and our systems of belief.

Thank you for the compassion for America. It's hard to come by nowadays

The whole site will be done by 2018, but one wtc will be done in 2013

Nothing wrong with Hockey and curling. all things in moderation.

This whole WTC rebuilding thing seems to be a big secret in most parts of the world that I have visited in the past 3 years. (Germany, Greece, Japan, Italy, U.A.E.) It is not much of a surprise that our neighbors to the north are ill informed.

Glad you could join us in the excitement.

I like how there are subtle references to the aesthetics of the twin towers in #1 and #7 (the placement of the towers as seen in the second picture, and the close-together vertical elements in their bases) in the context of a complex that will generally look very different from the original.
