sad to see as there's numerous apartments in area, many lower income as well. I wonder why he didnt try and sell instead of shutting their doors? or maybe landlord has a new tenant in-line already?

Apparently couldn't come to an agreement with the landlord.

I think Dakota Family Foods is closing because there is no reward for small format mainstrean independent supermarkets in urban areas. I expect more urban IGAs, Food Fairs and Family Foods locations to close if they are renting their premises.

Re Hudson Bay store closures in multiple cities for AC maintenance. It sounds plausible as a valid reason but they could also be closing to do an asset valuation or inventory count. It is definitely a little suspect that it was multiple cities and shortly after a big deal was announced.

Re Dakota Family Foods. Grocery retailing is a brutal industry. Even for the biggest players the margins are said to be 5% or less. Sure Weston and Sobeys are huge companies making lots of income but it is all about the volume they churn daily. For most grocery retailing a large part of your supply comes from one of two wholesalers, and not surprisingly they are owned by Weston and Sobeys. If you add in shrink (included thefts) you could be very close to a break even position on your operations. I've said it before these sort of closures are not unexpected and are going to increasingly be common as the grocery retailing model heavily pivots. It is going to be in person last mile stores with significantly higher costs of goods, not unlike convivence stores today, or online ordering from fulfilment centres for pickup or delivery with no non-staff access to the fulfilment center. As the early transition happens some of the early fulfilment centers are going to start life as the suburban supermakets we have now expect that staff order pickers will replace outside shoppers. We can all say we don't want this as much as we want but when the choice comes down to milk being $5 at the fulfilment center or $20 at the in person retailer the choice is pretty clear and that is just sharing the risks related to each transaction type.

Milk prices are set by the dairy board. But that's not the point. You've been foretelling the end of all bricks and mortar retail for years, and not only is it not dead, but it is doing pretty well overall. The people vote with their feet.

I am under the impression that Food Fair own most if not all of the buildings that they are in.

Again, the owner has stated that he could not come to a new lease agreement on the rental property with the owner and that's why he's closing the store.

I am suffering an American mall vacation with the kids and family at the mall of America. Anyway, last year I noticed that Manitobah Mukluks was opening a store in the mall, but not even 12 months later I noticed that there is no such store. I hope I just overlooked it and it didn’t go broke in such a short time. I am always rooting for local businesses to succeed in the rest of the world. Anyway I could not find news of the closure, if in fact there was ine. But I did google up tons of news of its opening in September 2023.

I don't think Rooms+Spaces was successful. I think they're liquidating.

potential 10 7-11 closing in Winnipeg due to crime. I'm not a 7-11 customer but many many are, sad to see/hear.

The one out by my place in East Kildonan is rumored to be closing on Saturday which is interesting because last month or so a new commercial flat roof was installed on the store. That store may be an exception though as it has been listed for sale for the last few months so some private owner may take it over for a storefront or small office site

I’m willing to bet with the realities of the current economy, people are spending less at convenience stores which charge a hefty premium for their products. As well, lottery sales being online has also probably taken a bite out of their sales, as well as the downward trend of tobacco smoking. I’m def not saying that crime isn’t affecting the bottom line, but I sincerely doubt it’s the entire picture here, similar to the Starbucks-In-The-Village closure solely blaming crime. Trying to lobby taxpayers to fund crime enforcement at no cost to their business model, in an effort to recover overall lost costs, is not out of the question here

Possibly 10 7/11 locations closing, 2 Giant Tigers shuttered, Starbucks in The Village.. Main common denominator....= Crime, theft with no consequences for the thief. They are mostly out on Bail for having done this hours ago. Lather, Rinse Repeat. Let us hope something gets done. The Bay lost lots of money the last few years they remained downtown as well. Covid was the sprinkles on the frosted doughnut for them to exit.
Recent Immigrants, mostly Ukrainians getting hacked with machetes (Selkirk Ave), beaten with baseball bats (Elmwood), losing digits, robbed, life altering injuries, messed up so bad Hospital needs 21 hours to put them back together? Security staff axed 9 am in Exchange District, .WHat next? Winnipeg is out of control & I am an optimist.. Our reputation is bad across the country, now internationally & getting worse by the day. Immigrants are safer staying in Ukraine.
