91 King

There is a good story today on CBC re the status of 91 King (and the two other properties owned by the same people on King Street). Unfortunately, it appears that these developers do not have the expertise or capital to undertake these projects and all three buildings are being left to rot (for the time being anyway). Truly unfortunate. See https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/91-king-fact-check-update-1.4840491

Drove by the Petro-Canada site at the corner of Chesley and Hilyard this morning, for the first time in awhile, and was pleasantly surprised to see work well underway on the new service station there. In fact there are two buildings in addition to the pump canopy; not sure if it's supposed to be getting a fast food joint like the east side location?

It’s especially troubling that the power has been cut off to one of the most beautiful buildings in Saint John on corner of King and Canterbury Streets. I mean if they can’t even pay the hydro bill, or arrange to have it connected or whatever the situation - then what care will they put into it to prevent deterioration? And liens on buildings is not typical as owner suggests. It means you aren’t paying your bills. I’m not hopeful with these developers. Historica knows how to do projects

I read the article a couple of hours ago. It makes me wonder how closely these two were scrutinized prior to the project announcement

I believe the second building is going to be a car wash. Like it was before. I don't think there is enough room there for a restaurant. The bayside drive one looks like a bigger space compared to this one. But I guess we will have to wait & see.

Breaking news, just saw a post on FB and CBC is reporting on it.

Explosion at the Irving Refinery

Hopefully it is contained quickly and doesn't do much damage.

According to CBC, Irving has posted on their Twitter feed - "major incident has occurred at our Saint John refinery this morning. We are actively assessing the situation at this time and will share more information when available."

Beware of the normal social media reports regarding this because as usual the uniformed public has the worst info and even in some cases outright untruths. While an unfortunate event any process plant/manufacturing facility, etc has inherant risks and or dangers. Especially when adding in a major maintenance event with 2500++ extra outside contractors. Hoping all involved in this incident went home safely. Stay tuned to official media outlets for more details.

According to Emergency crews, and Irving there where only 5 minor injuries, and since this statement all employees are home safe. all roads had been re opened by 16:30.

There was a fire at Moosehead? I can't find any news about that.

Seems to have skipped the news cycle but yes there was a small fire shortly after midnight at Moosehead. Nothing near the gravity or seriousness of the Irving one, obviously.

Going past the old Colonial Inn, on City Road, I noticed that the new signage says that it'll be a Day's Inn, by Wynham. All-in-all, the property is beginning to look a lot nicer than the previous state where the previous owner's seemed to neglect the property.

I actually thought the same thing when I drove by on the highway the other day & a day later drove by on City Road side. It is def looking nice and shows promise. Kudos for the new owner investing in a run down property. It won’t be no Hilton but a nice Days Inn is a vast improvement!

Agreed with the above posters on the new Days Inn [the old Colonial Inn], I think it’ll do wonders for City Road and it is great having a new, budget hotel option in the central peninsula.

Speaking of that area of town, the work on the old Mitchell apartments in Mount Pleasant is coming along nicely. I am excited to see them being rehabilitated, it is a great neighbourhood, good transit connections and walkable to Uptown, and that is a lot of housing units that will add value to the core.

Surprised no one has posted this yet, given the past discussion of Historica and the City Hall tower, but here is some news from CBC this past week:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/new-brunswick/saint-john-city-hall-sale-1.4875259

Quote:
Two Saint John developers have reached a deal that could lead to the purchase of one of the city's tallest office towers.

Keith Brideau and Dr. David Elias have created a new company and successfully negotiated a lease agreement with the municipality of Saint John, a key step to taking possession of the City Hall building at the foot of King Street.

Brideau is president and CEO of Historica, which has taken on the purchase and renovation of several century-old buildings in the city centre, turning vacant upper floors into loft-style apartments.
