The arctic outflow has arrived in Vancouver, dropped bellow freezing around noon and expected to reach -11° tomorrow morning. Forecast only called for scattered flurries but it seems we will get a few cm at least.

Last winter bottomored out at -34.1 in December.

Last time Edmonton has seen temperatures in this range was -37.6 in Jan 2020, -37.8 in Jan 1996. -40 hasn't been recorded in Edmonton since 1972. The next few nights will likely be the coldest temperatures I've experienced in my lifetime. The last time Calgary or Edmonton had daily highs that didn't get above -30 was 2004.

How do you cope? I guess if I moved there I'd need an engine block heater, heated hoodie & foot & hand warmers. Huge heating bills?

Long term prediction was a mild above seasonal January for western Canada!

El Niño baby!

Oh wait, now I remember why I never pay attention to long term models.

This week might be record smashing cold from Edmonton to Victoria to Dallas to Memphis.

^ -15c in Nashville next Tuesday. That's got to be some kind of record.

These photos were taken just before/right as the snow storm started. We've got a few centimetres since then.

There's been a slight bit of snow in the city now:

Traffic chaos & mass panic has ensued.

This extreme of weather is unusual enough that's it's not an extended coping issue really. The vast majority of people won't be spending much time outside for a few days, and most people will avoid going out if they don't need to, but in many ways it's not unlike a string of uncooperative weather in any season. I'm probably not going on any long walks this weekend and life shifts indoors as much as possible. Most work that needs to happen outdoors gets postponed for a a few days. Some things are irritating and more difficult than usual, things get put off if they can and you adjust your routine accordingly.

It will be bright and sunny, amplified by our first real snowfall of the season. There is a beauty and stillness to a extreme cold snap as well (from a heated location). I wouldn't say it's fun, but it is one of the strange crazy collective experiences and makes for great small talk.

It would be one thing if we stayed below -30 from November to March, but this weather is notable because it's unusual. Even in Edmonton, the average is 12 days in January get above 0.

But yes, a block heater is absolutely requried if you want reliable car in the winter, that's just the norm here.

I've got safeties (work clothes) that I use to tough out these kind of cold. It will be enough to get groceries and that kind of stuff. Was working outside in -32°C weather earlier this week so. . . it's not that bad. The bigger worry should be among those in the tent cities.

it took me just over 2.5 hours to drive from Sperling Burnaby Lake station on Lougheed Highway to Lougheed Town Centre, Lougheed from that station was a sea of red lights so I thought maybe Government Street will save something, but no. I left East Vancouver, stopped for gas at the RCSS on Grandview and the google maps originally advised I take Hwy 1, than changed it to Lougheed Hwy, Radio confirmed that Hwy 1 was a mess. So I chose Lougheed, it was ok throught Brentwood, than just from Sperling on was a thick blanket of snow and it was awful.
My BF said Surrey was fine, light snow nothing bad. Radio kept saying the south of the Fraser was fine, bare, no weather issues. North of the Fraser was the worst, they kept saying Burquitlam was a disaster. Anyway I finally get to my street which is near Austin and if you know that one its a steep climb and many vehicles were abandoned and many were spinning out trying to get up. I'm taking transit tomorrow, even though the snow is not forecast they got this possible "flurries" wrong. Had I known how bad it would get I would have left my car at work but Vancouver was like nothing going on around 2 pm.
I passed a Costco and the parking lot was nearly empty, I've never seen that before.

The Great Lakes are almost ice free, so they are are going to block a bunch of the cold air. But a little bit sneaks around the bottom of Lake Michigan

^ That's actually pretty neat. Isn’t shallow Lake Erie the only one that freezes anyway?

Meanwhile in Lotusland...

The buses couldn't make it up the hill on Davie Street in Vancouver's West End.
A couple centimetres of snow and freezing temperatures and we just grind to a near halt.

Was there any freezing rain or black ice on the road though?
