Windsor remains one of Canada’s hottest areas for construction, $670M in building permits in just the past two months.

The interchange for Lauzon makes so much sense! Driving to Windsor to visit my grandparents, in the past, we always had to get off at Manning. But they were closer to Lauzon Rd., near the river. And now with all the industrial development (never mind the existing stuff) along E.C. Row a closer connection to the 401 is a no-brainer.

Deal reached with Stellantis-LG.

With the new agreement Windsor also secures an R&D facility to employ 650

Those 650 high paying R and D jobs are a huge gain for the city. This agreement will ensure that Stellantis will make Windsor it’s North American hub of electric vehicle research and development.

This is great news, very exciting times for the region as the economy grows and diversifies. It will be interesting to see how many more new companies set up here because of the new battery plant and the opening of the Gordie Howe international crossing. Good times are ahead for sure.

Also, a new Windsor-Detroit rail tunnel is coming.

Where are you hearing that? CPKC just paid $300+ million for the existing tunnel in 2020. Do they need an extra track for capacity or something?

I heard it from Rhys Trenhaile in a podcast or video, can't remember. From what I understood the existing rail tunnel will be converted to passenger service with Amtrak bringing back their Chicago-Detroit-Toronto route. A new much larger rail tunnel will be built to handle taller freight trains.

I found this transportation project in pre design stage that is valued at $15bn. Wonder if this is our new rail tunnel.

Interesting - but I think it's unlikely.

Amtrak is looking for new train service through the tunnel - but likely only 1 train a day. You don't need dedicated infrastructure for that.

I also doubt a new tunnel would cost $15 billion. That's half the cost of Toronto's entire subway program.

looking into it a bit more - it is possible, I guess. I could see CPKC wanting double-stack containers, and with their acquisition of Kansas City Southern, may be looking to increase their cross border traffic substantially.

https://www.railway-technology.com/p...-rail-gateway/

A previous estimate from about a decade ago had it costing $400m - probably looking at about double that today.

I think its definitely happening. So much money has already been invested. According to the article the Detroit River Tunnel Partnership spent $100m on engineering alone.

Maybe once the gordie is done this will kick off?

If there is to be a new rail tunnel- I sure hope it will be compatible for high speed trains.

Maybe it doesn't have to support that right away, but proper future-proofing should be made so the tracks can be electrified easily, for example.

There should high speed rail service to Detroit & Chicago.

if there is a new tunnel it would be used for freight and passenger trains would use the existing tunnel.

It wouldn't be high speed compatible per se, being 113 years old and all.. But it would work just fine. High Speed Rail lines don't necessarily need to run at 300km/h for their entire corridor. A major tunnel segment under the Detroit River makes sense as a "pinch point" with reduced speeds, especially since it will likely be on the approach to the Windsor / Detroit stations anyway.

Let's focus on getting any kind of rail service across the border first - Amtrak is trying to restore Chicago-Toronto rail service right now..

Look like all of the investments in Windsor are paying off.

Good news!

The self-serving holdups that hindered the new bridge have delayed a lot of things that could have happened sooner in Windsor. Economic forecasts are notorious for often being wrong, but conditions are definitely in the city's favour (not just the forthcoming new border crossing either).
