It's better than being Thunder Bay, where parking is so scarce that nothing can do anything downtown. To handle Canada Day celebrations, the city is getting people to park miles away and busing them in. How archaic!!

Do you have businesses that refuse to locate downtown because "there is no parking"?

A blog by former Vancouverites who now call Winnipeg home. One of the bloggers was featured in the Free Press a few weeks back.

Traffic flow to improve in city

By: Staff Writer

WINNIPEG — Better timing of traffic lights should inprove the flow of vehicles on four major routes by the end of the year, according to city officials today.

By the end of this year, synchronization and upgrades to 65 signalled intersections will be completed along the following four major routes:

* Bishop Grandin Boulevard (Lagimodiere Boulevard to Kenaston Boulevard);
* Lagimodiere Boulevard (north city limit to the south city limit);
* Main Street (Higgins Avenue to the north city limit);
* Pembina Highway (Osborne Street/Corydon Avenue to the south city limit).

Synchronization of traffic signals has been completed on Lagimodiere Boulevard and Main Street. Pembina Highway is scheduled to be completed within the next few weeks. Synchronization of traffic signals on Bishop Grandin Boulevard will be done after Phase 2 of the Fort Garry Bridges Project is completed.

City staff are also updating the timing plans to improve the flow of traffic on 76 other signalled intersections along:

* St Mary's Road (Main Street to Warde Avenue);
* St. Anne's Road (St. Mary's Road to Aldgate Street);
* Portage Avenue (Broadway to St. Charles Street);
* McPhillips Street (Notre Dame Avenue to Templeton Avenue).

My God.

Synchronized traffic lights in Winnipeg? Surely, hell has frozen over.

That's fine and dandy, but I still believe that BG and Lagimodiere should become full fledged expressways like they were originally designed for. Traffic will only continue to build in Winnipeg, and there will be a point when the cheap method of traffic light synchronization will no longer be effective. Interchanges will be needed, and maybe a lot sooner than people anticipate.

i think "rush hour no parking" should be extended past 530pm on certain routes. I'm familiar with St. Mary's as I live near there, it's brutal...at 5:33, tons of people park in front of the apartment blocks or video store. these places have parking in back, but to save their fat arses 20 feet, they park in front.

Red River College receives $4.25M in funding for infrastructure projects
Last Updated: Thursday, July 2, 2009 | 12:09 PM CT
CBC News

Winnipeg's Red River College is getting $4.25 million in infrastructure funding from the provincial and federal governments.

Manitoba Infrastructure Minister Ron Lemieux said the funding, announced Thursday, will strengthen Red River's education base.

"Every time we improve educational opportunities, we better equip students to get into the workforce and gain employment," he said.

Each level of government is contributing $2.125 million. The money will go toward four projects at the Notre Dame Avenue campus:

Construction of a new energy centre/power engineering building.
Construction of a new greenhouse.
Renovations to Building M to allow for the expansion of the automotive program.
Construction of a new landscape construction shop.
The new energy centre will enable the college to double the number of students in the power engineering program. The greenhouse and landscape construction shop will be state-of-the-art facilities in green space management, said college president Jeff Zabudsky.

He said the funding will also help the province meet its growing need for skilled labourers.

"This investment is an important step toward development of a new Skilled Trades Centre at our Notre Dame Campus.

"Adding new labs and reconfiguring existing spaces will allow us to increase capacity to meet the strong demand for skilled workers in Manitoba."

It is expected that students will be able to use the new facilities within two years.

From the July 1, New York Times:

Quote:
And I miss Winnipeg’s winters, which any Winnipegger will tell you is ridiculous. Nonetheless, I miss the winter sun on snow and ice, the blue sky too cold for a scrap of cloud, and clear air like a healing draft so strong that too much will kill you. Walking in such weather is necessarily walking meditation, every breath sears with cold, every footfall in the snow crunches and squeaks. My expatriate sorrow is that the weather has become warmer and the government colder since I left.

Bishop Grandin is an expressway (although I don't think it will keep that title with the additional lights for the new office park thing). Perhaps you mean freeway?
