Its the same thing around the corner. Presumably they're temporarily insulating an interior workspace against the weather. Is this normal practice? Its behind the glazing on the South side facing Georgia.

I saw that too on the south side (about a foot back from the new curtain wall) - I was wondering whether it's just some sort of temporary construction enclosure.

EDIT - Yeah, I've never seen that before - but maybe they're so far behind because of the delayed curtain wall that they are doing some work that requires warmer conditions than the curtain wall alone would provide (or they can't wait for the curtain wall to be installed)?

The windows are operable - if they were meant to be opaque permanently, they would have used spandrel panels and not wasted the space betwen te two walls.

Yes. Is it going to happen? Not until we have a few million more people, and especially not now that Gordo's gone.

Burrard building is beautiful. I'm glad they clarified that they'd only be building something on that site once it had lived out its useful lifespan.

@AlexYVR: just to clarify my stance: I'm not one who wants mega-tall buildings for the sake of mega-tall buildings.
And I agree with you that this, not being NYC, is not cut out for such a concept.
And I DO like the Burrard Building. It's sleek. I just wish the Georgia side were a little wider, and that the building were a few stories taller.
*
I guess what I really meant when I commented on the "itty-bitty" buildings was that having them peppered in among tall buildings, especially along Georgia Street, gives the street an erratic (if that's the word) look.
I'd like to see the street more homogeneously designed, that's all, really.
Finally, putting up 300-metre buildings for the sake of 300-metre buildings is
ostentatious and "dumb," in the case of Vancouver, anyway.
Nevertheless, I would like to see a few more tallish (50 to 60 storey) buildings in the CBD, provided they are well placed and esthetically pleasing.
*
But as for humungous giants? Not here, thanks.

Perhaps some people are just very patient. I'm sure it'll happen, just a matter of time. Vancouver should be around for the next 200 years. Look how much things have changed even in 20 years.

@vansky: I think people DO care more than you realize. It's just that people feel that their hands are tied when it comes to input into design, the architects themselves, city hall permits, and the money required. At least I hope that I'm right - one has to remain optimistic ... (and even maybe start a thread on this topic ... )
*
@agrant: yes, it takes time. Things don't change dramatically overnight, unless it's in a boom city with slack planning, in which case there is often little attention paid to aesthetics.
The "curse" of the strict height limit of yesteryear has been broken (as with the Shangri La) and henceforth, even if incrementally, we should be seeing a few tall, dramatic, and hopefully elegant CBD buildings.

I notice in Vancouver threads it's all talk and no updates. The toronto threads are update after update with little to no chit chat about pointless stuff. More updates! Less pointless talk!

^^^^^^
I believe there's a seperate site called URBANTORONTO, or such. It's not an integral part of SKYSCRAPERPAGE, and deals only with Toronto.

(correct me if I'm wrong)

Anyway, Toronto feels the need to be seperate from the others ... they ARE so far ahead (and above) everyone else, are they not?

winter is the boring season for developments

anyone waiting to go ahead with a project are waiting to see what the market is like going into spring

any projects underway are being covered, but there just isn't much novel to discuss from day to day

i find the "what could be" chit chat as interesting as the "what is" notes and photos, at least in reasonable proportions

the developments in Vancouver tend to be more touch-and-go than those in Toronto. we don't have the federal government or national banks plunging headlong with projects here as their top priority, reconsideration happens first out in Vancouver before it happens closer to the centre of the universe.

---------
as for the Georgia, any new rumours about delays for the glass? is the LED lighting feature still going ahead?

Not much has happened on the Georgia window installation due to the snow.
(at least we don't have the odd trend on Urban Toronto to provide "update" photos of a tower from several kilometres away!
Half of the pics on a thread over there as of a "where's Waldo" nature.)

^^At least on SSC/SSP, they're really fixated with height and visibility in the skyline, so the where's waldo pics matter more over there.

imo, some of the toronto folks in the canada section are bordering on spam in terms of construction updates. it's painful to watch a building go up half a floor a time, from every possible vantage point, day and night shots and from multiple posters multiple times a day. IE. The Ritz. OMG that was painful. thank god it's done.

i like updates where things have actually changed! like the Bow updates and this project.

We've got a great number of angles with the various people posting for The Georgia.

Here's the latest by me today (Nov 27th, 2010)
(posted a bit bigger so you can see some of the detail, esp. for the curtain wall shot)
Compared with Delirium's Nov. 11th post, they've only poured ONE more floor on the tower since then.
4 floors to go I think.

Uploaded with ImageShack.us

Not sure what's up with the yellow insulation boards
- you can see that they're behind the curtain wall (and not covered by spandrel panels).
Maybe there are problems with the curtain wall or they are just testing it,
so they need the insulation to work on the inside of the floor?
But I don't see any boards going up on other floors.
