The NHL told playoff teams to work with their arenas to determine availability in July for playoffs if it's deemed safe to resume.

Watching playoff hockey on the patio would be pretty sweet.

I would think at the very least they would need to even out the number of games played prior to finalizing what teams are in or out of the playoffs.

Well, there goes Matthews' 50 goal season.

On the other hand, Leafs make the playoffs!

Apparently the CHL is holding a meeting today. More than likely there will be an announcement forthcoming regarding the suspension of the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs in the CHL, or the playing of games in empty arenas. The latter possibility is getting less likely now with the risk of players getting sick and infecting each other.

Very unfortunate. The Cats went all in this year, and were a serious Memorial Cup contender.
I can relate. I was getting so into the new Winnipeg ICE of the WHL... they have been on a tear lately and they were poised to make some real noise in the playoffs. The silver lining for the ICE is that they are a young team just starting to hit their stride together... this felt a bit like it was going to be the warmup act for what is still to come.

It wouldn't be ideal, but they would probably use pts/game as the criteria.

A playoffs with everyone coming in completely healthy (assuming the flu has passed) but also 3 months rusty would be very interesting

I would not be crazy about a half assed, rushed Stanley Cup playoffs. I'd rather just nix the season and carry on to 2020-21 than have some weird compressed bastardized playoffs in July or whatever.

I guess if this blows over in a month then maybe we can have something resembling a normal playoffs, but a lot of the estimates out there are saying this won't peak for another 2 to 3 months.

The other downside to a delayed playoffs would be a very short offseason for the teams that go the distance...

If playoffs run into July or August then I don't see how you don't delay the start of 2020-21. I think that will factor into the decision.

I think this season is toast. There's no downside to clinging to a sliver of hope as the NHL has done, but if the experts are right and this thing doesn't peak for another 2-3 months, then I don't know how you can expect to run playoffs unless it's something super condensed like Bruins vs. Blues best of 7 for the Cup or whatever. Maaaaybe 2 rounds involving the 4 division first place teams if you can get it up and running again in June.

They could do shortened series of three games for first two rounds. Five for the semis and seven for the cup, but I would guess this season is asterisked.

The NHL suspending operations was NBD, but the WHL suspending operations has made me big time sad. The ICE were poised for playoff success! That team is magic! But now...

How does Winnipeg support NHL, AHL and WHL?

Just do some impromptu World Cup of Hockey in the very beginning of summer.

Allow the winner to get the Stanley Cup

Simple! We direct deposit our paycheques to hockey team bank accounts. My kid's team takes whatever's left.

The ICE only play in a 1500 seat arena at the University of Manitoba right now until their new arena at the south west corner of the city gets built that will seat 5000. I think the Moose eventually may need to move to another city be it Fargo or somewhere else as the sports market dollar is tapped with Jets, Bombers, Goldeyes baseball, Valor soccer, Moose and ICE.

Should move the Moose to Saskatchewan!

Not if the shorten next season and push the start further into October. Not ideal but it is doable.
