The fact that the architects that designed the builds chose to ensure you couldn't actually eat in the kitchen from lack of space and the dining room was on the other side of a flight of stairs is a good indication why this project failed so terribly. I'm shocked it's taking this long to tear them down tbh. I think that the land should be sold off and market rent units built. There is too much public housing down there to begin with and risks "ghettoizing" the urban poor further. The MB housing initiatives need to start being dispersed and moved around the city, one unit here, three units there kinda thing.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the allotted funds for low income housing mentioned in the budget are going towards this redevelopment assuming it’s still a priority for this gov’t this budget year.

Centre Village failed because:
  1. the floor plans were terrible for families
  2. the courtyard was designed "for community" but nobody actually wanted to hang out there except for people who wanted to do something without being seen from the street
  3. barcode hubristically refused to have any fences to keep the aforementioned people out, which led to an unsafe-feeling area because it's next to a boarded up drug den, one of the worst streets of apartments in the city, and between two gathering points for severely intoxicated people (Balmoral vendor and Jumbo Pizza)
  4. the buildings are suffering structural issues that exceed the value of the property

also, Corten stair and railings.... who is this for, Saladfingers?

Who are you to judge if someone loves the feeling of rusty spoons? Some say the feeling is almost orgasmic.

Seems like a neat project. A little jarring next to such a beautiful house but UWCRC isn't known for its breathtaking architecture. Somewhat the opposite in my opinion haha.

By jove, you're right! I do see how I confused it with the Broadway one. Glad to see this one getting started.

I just want to say, it's nice to see someone using the phrase "By jove!".

Based on that render, it appears they are interconnecting the new building to the existing house - anyone know any details?

That house is amazing BTW, looks to be in incredible condition.

It’s a UWCRC 2.0 project partnered with three local service organizations, Family Dynamics, kwe Widdjiitiwin Inc., and New Journey Housing. It’s social housing to support Indigenous and newcomer women and children who have experienced gender-based violence with wraparound supports and includes 11 apartments with a total of 28 bedrooms capable of housing more than 36 individuals.
