Charity Hospital

Charity Hospital clean-out expected to cost $10 million, take 6 months
http://www.nola.com/politics/index.s...nout_cost.html
Quote:
The job state officials are bidding competitively to clean out the old Charity Hospital in New Orleans is expected to cost $10 million and take at least six months to complete.

It's been more than 11 years since Hurricane Katrina struck and the old hospital was abandoned as the city flooded from levee failures. In the aftermath, only medical records were removed from the building, and photos on websites taken by people who explore abandoned buildings show that much of the medical equipment and furniture remained as it was when abandoned.

But anyone hoping to get hold of some old Charity relics will be disappointed: The only thing the contractor is allowed to do with anything removed from the hospital is to scrap it for salvage or throw it away altogether. Part of that's because there is concern about whether some of the items being removed from the hospital have been contaminated by asbestos...

I'm assuming this is for cleaning out all the buildings too or just the main one

At our small elementary school, we had to remove a tile floor in the gym. The tile had asbestos. It cost $20,000 to have it taken out. That was about an 80' X 50' room.

You can imagine a building the size of Charity if it has a lot of asbestos.

Regarding the Convention Center, 321' is lower than I expected. Fitting 1200 rooms would give us another stumpy Hilton-like building. I was hoping for a 500-600' tower.

I guess it still possible. Seems like they are mainly trying to create their own district for zoning purposes. Later on when proposals are more concrete they could always seek a height waiver to that figure. Although, proposing that figure seems to indicate this is the height they are shooting for at this time. Still pretty early in process to say anything is set in stone. I always wondered why the convention center didnt get better zoning from the CZO to begin with. Really weird!

Brasfield & Gorrie

There's a huge construction site on the south side of Jefferson Hwy just east of Causeway with Brasfield & Gorrie general contractors banners all over. I can't find details on their web site among their dozens of big projects around the country. There was a high rise retirement project proposed for this location years ago. Does anyone know what's being built there?
