I gave up on keeping the Wiki page accurate about a year ago, people kept putting up bad info.

1,577' 10" minus 311' 2" = 1,266' 8" Many prints are done in such a way that the ground floor is 0' 0" elevation. The PA uses a system where zero elevation is 300 feet below mean high tide at Battery Park Point so one has to subtract 311' 2" (The elevation of the Lobby) from any elevation shown on the prints.

Thanks zensteeldude,

I keep forgetting that floor 102 is around 27 ft tall and that -per the renderings- it has a "loft" which would maybe be at 1280 or so, putting it only about 73 ft shy of the Sears Tower deck. Not too shabby. Of course, maintenance workers will be able to enjoy the view from the catwalk on top of the communications ring at over 1400 ft.

Excuse me for quoting myself here, but according to the City of New York, 55 Water is over 3.5 million square feet. That's way bigger than anything being putting up at the WTC site.

I think when you're that high, 73 feet doesn't make much of a difference.

I was on the roof of 520 Madison Ave. on a cold day with the wind hitting 40mph, back in 1981 and I would have to agree with you, 73 feet would not have made a dang bit of difference !!

That is the largest tower in New York, and will remain larger than any of the WTC towers. 55 Water St still has about .8 msf of unused air rights. They were going to build and addition over the elevated plaza, but that was canceled.

I knew it was the biggest in New York (and as far as I can tell the largest office building in the world after the Pentagon, Sears Tower and Taipei 101), but I heard they maxed out their air rights, which is why they rehabbed the plaza rather than add another annex.

We've also got the Mart here in Chicago at 4 million sq. ft. Show spaces as much as offices I guess?

The addition (per the original plans) called for another tower built across the FDR on landfill in the East River. The park was designed to provide pedestrian access to that building over the freeway, hence the elevation. The tower never got built, and that's how we got stuck with that awful park.

Maybe the glass for the gap panels is put in with the panels from the floor above? ...sort of an interlocking zipper system. Just a guess.

I don't believe that they did. But either case, it's likely to remain the largest office tower in the city.

The slow, steady rise from the ashes of a tragedy

One World Trade Center, also known as the Freedom Tower under construction.
The American flag reads "In loving memory of the brave and innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001: Never Forget".

Quote:
...There are wooden boards fencing off the area. Behind these lie a steel outline of a 1,776-foot tower — one of the five being built for the new World Trade Center complex, a project taken up by the Port Authority and several other companies. The specificity of the height is intentional: 1776 marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a significant event in U.S. history.

This month steel beams reached the 48th floor, leaving more than half of the floors to be completed. Workers also began installing the first of the tower's 13-foot glass windows.

BTW, nice use of the Freedom Tower on the skyline...
