The Metropolitan in Calgary is cringe worthy.

The Clunky duo of Calgary Sasso and Vetro.

Those two buildings are atrocious, simply atrocious. There is nothing redeeming about them in my eyes. The massing sucks, the colors are awful, and the aesthetics are null and void

Jumpin' Jesus. Talk about a dog's breakfast (of regurgitated vomit, no less).

It would be less offensive if these were not everywhere (I just posted images from 2 cities now)

Those are cheap modern reclads. Original 60s-70s tower blocks (like the "ugly" ones around High Park you posted) perfectly encapsulate the zeitgeist of post-war utilitarian architecture.

Unfortunately a lot of them have become dilapidated and undergone shitty renovations from lazy slumlords.

That's painful, it looks like a bastardized Vancouver condo....just taller and uglier.

Sasso and Vetro get a ton of hate but I personally find their neighbours the Nuera twins even worse.

This is how they were first proposed:

This is what was built:

A spandrel mess with dijon stucco.

Pretty much all of the 00's buildings along Macleod Trail across from the Stampede grounds are ugly and try way too hard.

Behold the Keynote fuglies:

Stampede station was supposed to have a twin but thankfully the economy seems to have killed it.

If you notice a theme with ugly orange brick podiums it's because city council passed a well intentioned but ultimately ill advised bylaw that all the new buildings had to have red brick podiums to "fit it" with the historic red brick warehouses and buildings in the area. This spawned what Calgary forumers have dubbed "Stampitecture". Cheesy, fake historic attempts that fit in more with the image of the Stampede than actual historical architecture.

Both are trainwrecks. On the same level for me.

Vogue is probably Lacaille's best executed project in Calgary. It obviously won't win any awards but it is a million times better than 5 West or some of their other dreck.

I googled Lacaille and turns out they are behind a lot of my least favourite buildings in Calgary. Here’s another one of their classics (read: abominations).
