The Gordon B. Shrum Building at UBC, home of the School of Biomedical Engineering, is now complete!
This 158,000 sq ft, five-storey facility is Canada’s first purpose-built biomedical engineering hub, bringing together students, researchers, and industry partners to advance health solutions and grow B.C.’s biotech sector. The building includes specialized labs, collaborative research spaces, lecture theatres, and a two-level vivarium, all designed to support hands-on learning and cutting-edge biomedical research.
Ventana provided full design-assist, pre-construction, value engineering, and construction services, working closely with UBC Properties Trust and Patkau Architects. The facility was built to the Rick Hansen Foundation accessibility certification standards, ensuring a high-performing, inclusive, and safe environment. Extensive BIM modelling supported visualization, coordination, and constructibility throughout the project.
