Menno Hall CLT install drone footage

Quote:
Project Update: CLT installation is now underway at Menno Hall, the new gateway to UBC.

Menno Hall is a unique mass timber wood-frame hybrid structure supported by three levels of cast-in-place concrete, including two underground parking levels and a transfer slab.

From now until fall, 318 Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) panels will be installed in sections, each carefully unwrapped and lifted into place to align with the below framing, then secured to the building.

This construction sequence is a welcome adjustment from a typical concrete tower, with framing following closely behind each CTL section for a seamless and efficient process. Additionally, all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing penetrations were incorporated into the CLT fabrication process, reducing on-site drilling and coordination.

The Gordon B. Shrum Building at UBC, home of the School of Biomedical Engineering, is now complete!

This 158,000 sq ft, five-storey facility is Canada’s first purpose-built biomedical engineering hub, bringing together students, researchers, and industry partners to advance health solutions and grow B.C.’s biotech sector. The building includes specialized labs, collaborative research spaces, lecture theatres, and a two-level vivarium, all designed to support hands-on learning and cutting-edge biomedical research.

Ventana provided full design-assist, pre-construction, value engineering, and construction services, working closely with UBC Properties Trust and Patkau Architects. The facility was built to the Rick Hansen Foundation accessibility certification standards, ensuring a high-performing, inclusive, and safe environment. Extensive BIM modelling supported visualization, coordination, and constructibility throughout the project.
