It's 9 at 11 am in Halifax this morning. We dropped to as low as 6.3 overnight. Today is a mix of sun and cloud but tomorrow will again be rainy and cool but come Monday the weather will start a trend towards normal. The cool weather does not seem to be slowing the growth of a potted rhododendron i keep on my terrace.

The fog transitioned to spits of heavy rain and jittery gusts of wind.

It's mainly sunny, with a high of around 18°C in Vancouver today.

18C and sunny. I get it that is a beautiful day and pretty much perfect for outdoor sports, but we are yet again a whopping 4 degrees below normal.

Low of 9C this morning.

The warmspot was Norway House, MB at 34.8C.

Warmest low yesterday was Winnipeg (the Forks), MB at 20.7C.

Gorgeous pics Architype - I remember stumbling across that lovely grassy/flowery hill while walking back from a nearby brew pub. And by stumbling I mean coming across by accident..

Still cloudy but thinner than yesterday. You can guess where the sun might be. Dryer as well.

8C and mostly cloudy in Moncton at noontime, going up to 12C this afternoon. This will be the last day of the real cold snap. Temperatures however will remain coolish for another couple of days.

It actually froze here last night (-0.6C). I doubt there was any real damage, but, still, it's almost June........

I was in Halifax yesterday (grandson's spring league hockey tournament) and I took a walk on the waterfront boardwalk in the afternoon between games. There was a cruise ship in port and it was amusing watching all those American tourists wandering about in parkas trying to brave the downright cold northerly winds.

I was surprised to see how far behind the leaves are in Halifax compared to Moncton.Usually they are a little ahead. I presume this is because we had several days of real heat here in Moncton the other week that they missed along coastal NS.

It looks like this, which is pretty far behind normal, but also pretty far along:

Source

It's about 10 degrees below normal today, and pictures this year have looked 1-2 weeks behind compared to last year. Halifax has a really long and sluggish spring compared to more continental areas, so it's possible to have rainy weather in February or March, but May is often cool. Usually by late May the trees are more or less in summer mode.

I wonder if the comparison to Moncton is always apples to apples (no pun intended) since a lot of the tree species are different. For example you might see a fully leafed out maple but then some European species might be slower. You can see the mix in this photo. It can be the same in forests with oak being more dominant than maple farther south/west in NS, which I assume will grow with climate change.

It was behind in the Ottawa region as well, then we got a blast of heat in late May and all the trees exploded. Doesn't take much.

I've got a crabapple tree in my front yard that has varied in bloom from May 5 to May 25 (in the near 20 years I've been there). This year it was really late. Same with the lilacs.

I looked and May on average wasn't even much below normal in Halifax, but what stands out is this cold snap over the last few days. 5 days right at the end of May with highs only around 8-9. That is the late May equivalent of an arctic outflow.

Painting all the ceilings might take me a year. Another room done, at least. Clouds are heavy again now and the leaves have been basically frozen in time for a week. I think my magnolia blooms might rot before they open lol

It's 22 with a dew point of 2.9, we don't get that many days with no humidex whatsoever. Not a cloud in the sky either, very nice day.

All trees are leafed out here , but some just started in the past couple weeks. Maples, elm, and smaller bushes and trees were leafed out by mid April. Noticeable late trees were the usual ones. Looking around my neighborhood many trees were bare until the past week or two: honey locust, hickory, oak, pawpaw, mulberry, black walnut, cottonwood, sycamore and catalpa. My pawpaw are about three weeks behind their earliest years.
