Wait, Locavore's gone already? What a flash in the pan that was...

Haven't heard anything about that rumour myself, but Pomodori would at least be the kind of place with the staying power to actually stay open there for a while. And as a Westfield/West Sider I sure would love to be able to get their pizza once in a while without having to make a long drive all the way out to the Valley.

Saint John Google Earth 3D is back!

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but, finally, Saint John is back on Google Earth's 3D! Also, they have added Moncton to the 3D category too.

Can't wait to add Pomodori to my slate of Uptown lunch spots!

In other news, Moosehead has resurrected its plans for a small batch brewery and tap room - this time it's to be co-located with their main facility on the West Side. Here are a few renderings from this Huddle article:

The interior looks nice, though I find the site plan a bit lacklustre, particularly its interaction with Main Street West.

Honestly, it's about as much as I would have expected given Moosehead's current situation. Without the big contracts they had a decade ago, they're just not really in a position to spend extravagantly on this project.

I'm guessing that they'll leverage this to get back on the list of cruise passenger excursions after having discontinued the factory tours they used to do (which was required along with improved access control around the plant for them to get security certified for the fast lane through customs, IIRC).

Main Streets, both West and North need infill so I was hoping it was going to be a separate building where the Country Store was. But this is still pretty wicked!

They're going to need some major work on the exterior if they want it to have anywhere near the ambiance they're going for.

That location is in the middle of a parking lot sandwiched between a bunch of loading docks. Nothing about it is inviting at all.

SAINT JOHN – Hotel room stays were up 3.9 percent in Saint John last year, a reflection of the innovative and collaborative spirit in the city’s cultural and tourism sectors, say the heads of Discover Saint John and the Saint John Hotel Association.

The increase was reported by STR, a leading authority on hotel industry performance trends.

...

Over the last two years, room sales have increased 12 per cent, and hotel revenues have grown 18 per cent.

Irving Land Purchase News

Irving has purchased 850-898 Dever Road in the city's west end. Tenants where issued there notice they have 4 months to find a new place. Aparently Irving is slowlly buying out the side of the road backing onto the train tracks, or at least the New Brunswick Southern Railway building, and Rail Yard.

But apart from the mills, newspapers, shipyard, tugboats, trucking, radio stations, real estate, railways, and influence, what have the Irvings ever done for us?

Except all of those things already existed under various other owners. Irving never built a shipyard or a pulp mill in the city. They were already here.

Break them up! their control and power is so vast (which makes it easy for them to weasel their way into paying such little taxes) there isn't much difference if the state just owned everything... and clearly no one wants that. At least the state is somewhat accountable to the public! We need a dramatic redistribution of wealth in NB

Another note..

Please, unlike the Federal government in 2003 with the shipyard closure relief -- don't give stimulus money to billionaires

News Release
Regional Development Corporation
Office of the Premier
‘New deal’ proposed for Saint John
09 February 2018
SAINT JOHN (GNB) – The provincial government and City of Saint John have agreed to undertake a series of short-, medium- and long-term measures to help grow the city’s economy.

“New Brunswick’s economy needs a strong Saint John,” said Premier Brian Gallant. “As your government, we will be there for Saint John and we will invest in economic growth to create more opportunities for the people of Saint John.”

On July 6, 2017, Mayor Don Darling called for a “new deal” for Saint John in his state of the city address. On Sept. 19, Gallant announced that the government was prepared to explore a new deal and talks have continued since that time.

“The measures announced today underscore the provincial government's continued commitment to helping us shape a long-term sustainability vision for Saint John, and ensuring that we continue to play a leadership role in moving New Brunswick’s economy forward,” said Darling. “The funds will allow us to continue to deliver on core services that our citizens deserve, including public safety, municipal operations and parks and recreation.”

Under this agreement, the provincial government will immediately undertake several measures, including the following:

Invest at least $270 million in infrastructure projects in Saint John.
Invest more than $50 million in major tourism assets in Saint John.
Work to grow Saint John’s population and workforce by promoting the Free Tuition Program and Youth Employment Fund with a special focus on Saint John, and guarantee that at least 25 per cent of immigrants under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Project are attributed to employers in Saint John.
Apply a preference that regional provincial assets be located in the city instead of in surrounding areas, as was done with a recently announced nursing home for Saint John.
Address Saint John’s poverty challenges through a $10-million investment in Living SJ and other innovative partnerships.
Support private sector development opportunities and subsidize job placements in Saint John with an estimated $273 million through the enhanced Youth Employment Fund to help youth develop skills, obtain work experience and find jobs.
Provide enhanced ability to pursue economic opportunities and priorities through the Opportunities NB and Fundy Regional Service Commission memorandum of understanding.
A working committee of senior officials representing the government and the city will be established to measure progress on these initiatives, and to propose other measures. The goal is to eliminate Saint John’s structural deficit through growth as quickly as possible, but the government has agreed to provide financial assistance of up to $22.8 million over three years if the deficit has not been eliminated.

Special arrangements and programs have been established in the past for regions and municipalities with sudden or structural economic challenges. This includes economic restructuring packages to diversify Moncton’s economy following the closure of major employers, including the CN Rail locomotive shops, assistance in the creation and implementation of a community action plan for Dalhousie and the surrounding area when several major employers ceased operations, assistance and skills training for workers in Miramichi when several major employers ceased operations, and the establishment of special economic development and innovation funds for northern New Brunswick.

It ain't looking good for Irving oil as Residents near the Plant are angry after a Butane gas leak almost 80 Residents where affected but it seems Irving Oil might be flip flopping on a deal to purchase the homes affected as they told 30, or more residents they where not intrested in buying any homes but where aparently in talks with others about having there homes assesed for purchase by the oil giant. If the province Gives Irving one more cent of tax payer money I believe it will be game over for the Gallant government.
