To "be rouged" has entered the Canadian lexicon as a new term indicating indifferent service in an uncomfortable environment with a general sense of disregard and contempt.

I was rouged on a trip to San Diego about six years back. By the time I got off the plane, I was damned near crippled.

Ditto for me on a flight to Tampa 2-3 years ago on an A320. No room at all to move my legs during the flight (I'm a little over 6'1", so hardly a giant) and my knees were screaming by the time we landed. I was hobbling around for the next couple of days.

I've taken to calling them Air Canada Rude.

Fortunately, Porter now offers a much more comfortable ride on that route on the E195-E2 where you can buy an extra-legroom seat for a small premium.

Icelandair 2026 Halifax Flight Schedule Increases

Icelandair have recently updated their 2026 schedule for Halifax. Their first flight is scheduled for Thursday, June 4 which is 2 1/2 weeks earlier than there 2025 seasonal flight. This flight will operate YYZ (Halifax) to KEF (Reykjavík) one to three times per week until June 21. Then it will increase to five days per week (MWTFS). This is an increase from 2025 when they only operated three flights per week. The schedule on their website currently only goes until August 19. The five flights per week continue right up until this date.

Florida Flight Reductions

Porter Airlines have removed their nonstop Halifax to Tampa flights for the winter 2025/26 season. Previously they offered three times weekly service on this route for the 2024/25 winter season. When trying to make a reservation from Halifax to Tampa, this winter, their website routes you through Ottawa, Toronto, or Hamilton.

Air Transat no longer have their own airplanes offering nonstop Halifax to Orlando flights for the winter 2025/26 season. They are choosing to codeshare with Porter airlines on this route using their airplanes.

As mentioned in a previous post, WestJet have cancelled their Halifax to Orlando nonstop flights for the winter season. This route will only be offered during the summer season from May to October.

I don’t think this has been posted here before but apparently the maple leaf lounge is closing (or is closed) until early 2027. There is a building permit in for an 11 million renovation, which either includes a terrace or a second floor.

Only mentioning because that’s a long time and a surprisingly large amount of money!

Good news! The current lounge is too small and it's worn. More than a year seems like a very long time for a redo. I guess we should expect something exceptional?

Hopefully the renovated ML lounge will have a similar style to the one in St. John's. Though on the small side, the YYT lounge is very contemporary and stylish. Its easiest the nicest of all the domestic ML lounges. The YYT lounge seems to be the only one which pays homage to its location with the food offerings. Breakfast always includes Toutons and molasses on the side.

Not a full lounge, but I checked out the new AC Cafe in Montreal recently... has Montreal smoked meat sandwiches, Montreal bagels, and local kombucha and beer on-tap. Lighting, I recognized from a Quebecois designer as well. It was nice to see a sense of place in a space focused on travel.

There's such a range in quality in the lounges and some have really declined. When the SF lounge opened it was serving good food and had a full bar. Toronto and Vancouver had some pretty rough food options a few times, and they can get so full you have to wait and the atmosphere and noise levels are comparable to or worse than outside the lounge.

People also like to take their screaming babies into the lounges.

I'll have to check-out the AC Cafe next time through YUL. Good that local products are being profiled.

This forum over at Flyertalk includes some photos of the lounge design from some sort of launch/announcement event that was held at Halifax Stanfield back at the end of October:

Madrid would be great. It doesn't get a lot of press but it's a fantastic city - easily walkable, with tons of historic sites and architecture to see, and easy, fast rail connections to everywhere, and a great subway system. Well worth a visit.

Lisbon is a hot destination - Portugal is the flavor of the month (or last several years, anyway), but LIS is operating past capacity and bursting at the seams. I was under the impression that landing slots were virtually impossible to come by there. Guess we'll see...
