it definitely has grown on me but i still find it so 'vancouver mundane' in that it is really nice but is not something i would remember or identify vancouver with/by.

somewhat forgettable

^You have to see the Convention Center in person to truly be able to understand it. Pictures do not do justice to the seamless connection of city to waterfront that that massive building is able to achieve. Or the warm ambient glow that is given off at night from the ample amount of wood used inside and out. Or the fact that it feels alive and animated day and night because of the ultra clear glass walls that surround it. I agree the architecture itself is not something any visitor is going to remember. But I'm happy with the fact that it's not an inward facing box on the fringe of the city that most cities in NA build.

Ha! Great ads for Chevron. Maybe they should have named it the Chevron Vancouver Convention Centre .

Great shots, though.

For the record, I like our little water gas station. As someone else had mentioned, it made a pleasant impression of me on my first visit to the city. I think it taps into the little kid "Isn't that so neato?" reaction we learn to suppress as we grow up.

Exxon? Exxon owns Esso, not Chevron.

Sorry, Chevron. I didn't have the photo up when I typed that and just ran with the wrong name. My bad. I corrected the comment.

i have seen it in person more than a few times...

i do wholeheartedly agree that it is nice to have versus a big box on the edge. I was in Boston in Nov for Greenbuild and while huge and amazingly nice, their conference centre (BCEC) was in the middle of nowhere south of downtown with few walkable places around it currently.

whats great about it is its not just for convention people - anyone can go down there and wander around and enjoy the views and walks around it

its just a convention centre afterall - i would expect something more if it were an art gallery or something else

1st of all this design incorporates a lot of things 'convention centres' dont have but it also, and in my opinion, could have finally brought some recognition and a true identifiable symbol (although the sails at canada place are cool) to the city.

Paris - Eiffel

Longon - big ben

sydney - opera house

toronto - cn

nyc - empire state

calgary - calgary tower

vancouver - ?

Edmonton is similar to vancouver in this case for it really has no single identifiable symbol that is known by most people.

Calgary has a tower? The only identifiable building I can think of is the Saddledome, and the future Bow (possibly)

IMO, Vancouver isn't a major city that has "one of those landmarks". Rather, our city is identified by the bigger picture with several less prominent landmarks, like the mountains, ocean, Stanley Park, Canada Place, BC Place and maybe the Harbour Centre.

mountains and ocean, very symbolic, mixed with some condos.

For what it's worth I agree with Cold, I think given the budget and location of the CC a large opportunity was lost to create a landmark for Vancouver. Canada place is decent, but certainly not recognizable like the others show above. I would definitely put it above Calgary Tower!

Lets hope we can get something recognizable with the new art gallery.
