Guys, I just saw this video on Twitter, regarding the Colonial Inn...

https://twitter.com/chsjnews/status/897122797616582656/video/1

Does this mean that the Inn has closed it's doors? o.o

Someone on a Saint John FB group said that the City Road Bakery has also closed it's doors too. Any confirmation on that one as well? o.o

I think that City Road could do with a good redevelopment, given the fact that Haymarket Square, from what I heard, now being completely empty.

Truthfully, City Road has just seemed to be, to me, a pass through road to either get to the East Side or Uptown core. It needs something on it that can pop eyeballs, and sadly, I don't think that either the Colonial Inn, or that bar beside the winery, really cut it much right now.

The City Road bakery could also use a re-location elsewhere...maybe build a new one on the site of the old New System laundromat, which got cooked in that fire?

And maybe relocate the bar to the land that is where the former Scotsburn Dairy building was....having that there could create a bit of a party zone for big Saint John Sea Dogs games(President's Cup Championship Series & Memorial Cup Playoffs, if Saint John got to host that) that goes across the street into the arena's parking lot.

In terms of Haymarket Square, I still say that building should be torn down, and a new grocery store built there....discount store, like what FreshCo is in Ontario.

Either way, City Road needs some attention and love.

=P

^For sure. I mean, Haymarket Square actally used to be a proper square.. so much of SJ was senselessly torn down to build freeways. So much wasted money was spent to destroy communities. We gotta get back to the pedestrian sort of development, rebuild the east end and Haymarket Square, connect the lower west side to the uptown etc. The Harbour Bridge needs pedestrian access or else a harbour ferry should be put back

I think Harbour Passage is a step in the right direction. I know that I, for one, would prefer to walk the Passage and cross the Reversing Falls bridge rather than endure a long, boring walk over the hugeness of the Harbour Bridge.

But until Harbour Passage is fixed up between HMCS Brunswicker and the bridge, and extended from the bridge into the west side, it's not yet good enough to fulfill its potential.

In my dream scenario where there's passenger rail between SJ&KV Haymarket Square would be an obvious spot for a multimodal train station. One at Haymarket with another at Union (Harbour) Station. There's little basis for this right now, of course.

I suppose the exciting thing is that City Road can't get much worse than it is right now. There is a ton of space available there to make some sort of development work, but until it moves away from being an automobile corridor to a more pedestrian friendly area it will remain as it is. A stronger, more developed Waterloo Village with more residents leads to a stronger, more developed City Road...but only if it's built properly.

They are owned by the same family; so wouldn't be surprised.

First of all, great job kwajo on with the CBC radio interview this morning! Very informative and can't wait for the 2017 results of the harbour water.

My opinion on City Road...burn it all down and start from scratch, this is got to be the largest eyesore of mixed zoning in the city. Yikes

The new Irving tower is looking really good (city skyline) from the West Side, what a great compliment to the uptown core!
