BTW guys I think I saw my first coal roller in Quebec EVER this week. He wasn't blowing smoke or anything (the engine was not running) but he had the telltale smokestacks. The guy standing next to it was what you might imagine a Québécois guy with a coal roller pickup to look like.

People may have these stacks for offroading purposes (when in water...), even on a gasoline-powered truck. Did it look like the vehicle was 4x4 oriented?

Under the right conditions you might mistake one of my trucks (my GM) for a coal roller, as it's normal for an unmodified diesel of that era to emit black smoke under strain. Not desirable, but again I don't needlessly drive it.

In a weird bit of culture bending, whilst in Vancouver earlier this year we did note a number of large, expensive modified pickups being driven in the downtown area (not 'rollers though.. they were gaspots) And being driven by Asian girls! It was a funny thing to see

LOL. no one ever EVER puts those stacks on for utilitarian purposes.

Plus if you had a stack like that and you were worried about water you'd have a snorkel on it

1) I wouldn't put it past Acajack to have failed to notice the air intake was raised as well.
2) I didn't say it was an important, useful modification, I said it's not unheard of that people would do that on gasoline trucks (in which case they would also nearly always have other offroad-oriented mods, useful or not).

I've actually seen gassers with stacks, so that should be the end of the argument. If you don't see it emit black smoke, you can't know for sure.

^ Pretty much any truck I have seen with a stack in Alberta is a pavement princess or a rig rocket. The stack is purely for effect.

I've literally drowned my old Z-71 in water, almost up to the top of the wheel arches. The trick is to not shut the engine off

My best friend drowned a Lada Samara in water once (stupidity, mostly) and it did stall.

However, after marinating in there for not more than an hour, it re-started after we got it extracted from that pond. The exhaust was spitting water droplets / vapor at first while cranking, then I suppose the heat dried the cylinders enough that it could start normally even if some water had gotten in there through the intake.

The details are a bit more vague now because it's been a long time - I dearly regret we don't have the whole thing on videotape. But I know it started, and it started pretty easily (we were really surprised).

And yet those pics don't appear to show trucks from Alberta. The bottom one looks like an Ontario truck plate. The top one has an obscured front plate. I was unaware that Alberta had front plates.
