Further to Sparky's note.
From the Freep:

https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/lo...-taylor-avenue

"A northern First Nation has purchased the sprawling former Manitoba Hydro headquarters in Winnipeg, after a year of negotiations.

Norway House Cree Nation said the roughly 200,000-square-foot building in Grant Park will be used to develop new businesses and more services from its administration and health programs, with the goal of creating jobs for band members.

NHCN also intends to lease some of the office space."

So a band of roughly 9000 people needs an office building that size?

And a building will create jobs?

We're in the phase of empire building for some of Manitoba's First Nations and undoubtedly most on those reserves will see little to no improvement in their lives!

I’m fine with it, my point is that nothing exciting is happening construction-wise which is all I much care about on this forum lol

I was fantasy-hoping for a bulldoze and a redevelop

Local chud: complains endlessly about First Nations doing nothing to improve the lives of their people.

First Nations: begin to engage in large scale economic development projects throughout Winnipeg, in pretty much the same vein that all others do.

Local chud: Hey wait, not like that!

With MMF taking a former Wawanesa building and now this development with the old Hydro property, it's good on two fronts: 1- reconciliation, and 2 - office absorption in an otherwise stagnant market. A made-in-Manitoba solution.

Long-standing city printer closes, massive near-century-old Portage Avenue building mostly empty

After nearly 80 years, Kromar Printing Ltd. has closed its doors, leaving a massive building vacant on the edge of the city’s downtown core.

The Business Development Bank of Canada filed for a receivership of the Winnipeg-based printing business on Nov. 24 and the company shuttered last Friday.

I already thought this building was empty anyway. Now we know the real deal. Can't believe they have been allowed to have the sidewalk barrier up along Portage for so long as well.

I would be very careful about making comments that can be seen as straight up accusation of being racist. We live in a world where lawsuits happen over memes let alone slander...
I realize its hear say, but I would like to think this community is above the garbage we see everywhere else. Just because you don't like someone or agree with him, you shouldn't jump to insinuating something like that with zero evidence. Everyone can read between the lines and we should be better then that.

1. Telling someone they're gonna get sued for calling out racist comments on a web forum is laughable

2. The person in question not only goes out of their way to make negative comments on literally any post about anything to do with the indigenous community, but they also routinely make comments alluding to "certain groups" they say are entitled, lazy troublemakers who don't want to work and want everything for free, etc etc. Yes we can read between the lines and recognize somebody is being racist when they always on here being racist. Sue me lol.

I don't think you can get sued for calling someone a chud. Whatever insinuation you took from my statement is on you. Anyways, back to construction talk.

Have heard speculation that the exterior skywalk refurbishment that was to be supported under the previous NDP government may see the light of day again. New gov't is very interested in downtown renewal.

What did that look like? Aren't the skywalks privately owned?

It wasn't an attack on the poster. It was out of potential concern and the 2 of us have discussed it. But thank you for butting in. I suppose I should have Private messaged him and will do so in the future. The biggest issue with this site is seeing the underlying lack of common respect for one another that is being displayed more often then not. So if you want to rip me for that and show I'm right, please go ahead. Attacking someone because you don't agree with what they say just makes you wrong. Real debate is seeing both sides of the story. If you cant do that, you've lost the argument.

Komar was appealing in OCT 2023 a city order to fix the crumbling facade on their building and remove the sidewalk barrier that was installed in 2017.

The outcome was a 90 day extension to complete the order, but now that they are out of business they may not have the money to do the work.

I don't know if in a case like this the city would have to pay to have the work done and put it on the tax bill for a future payment by the existing or a new owner?

It’s always the left wing woke that can’t seem to tolerate any viewpoint or opinion different from their own, close minded and righteous without the intelligence to back up anything they pretend to believe in!
