so nice to see giving back --- the old cedar ymca, the city's first integrated y, is being converted into a part of african town plaza --

Cuyahoga County Council backs African Town Plaza project with grant and loan

Members also discussed on-again, off-again federal funding for solar projects.

by Frank W. Lewis and Cleveland Documenters
April 3, 2025

Cuyahoga County Council unanimously approved a $300,000 community development grant for African Town Plaza, a planned $9 million commercial and residential redevelopment of the long-closed, historic YMCA Cedar Branch in the Fairfax neighborhood.

“To have this developer come in and redevelop this building for a multi-million-dollar project is a godsend to this community,” District 8 Council Member Pernel Jones, Jr. said. “It fills a void. The developer has talked about an opportunity for mentoring of individuals to be developers like himself.”

The developer is James Sosan, a former telecom engineer turned developer who purchased the former Y, at 7515 Cedar Ave., in 2023. A Nigerian immigrant, Sosan told Crain’s Cleveland in December that African Town Plaza will include 20 apartments, a cultural event center and commercial kitchen in the gym and offices in the converted pool area.

The first Cedar Branch YMCA was built on the site in 1879 and was the first in the city to welcome Black and white men, according to Green Book Cleveland. The current building was erected in 1942.

another nice conversion --

City View Lofts to Turn Aging Euclid Avenue Office Into Affordable Housing

The latest plan to Downtown Cleveland would convert a 1950s-era office property into 33 apartments, continuing the city's post-pandemic shift toward housing.
BY KEN PRENDERGAST, NEOTRANS | OCT. 8, 2025

Plans were submitted to the city yesterday for the latest conversion of an aging, post-war office building near the intersection of Euclid Avenue and East 30th Street. But the proposed conversion at 2728 Euclid Ave. may come at a bargain price.

Several vacant, obsolete office buildings nearby in the Euclid-East 30th area were recently converted. These apartments — Innerbelt Lofts, University Studios, The Midtown Apartments — have more affordable prices than those in the central business district.

Yet they offer easy easy car, bike and transit access to Downtown Cleveland and University Circle — the first- and fourth-largest employment centers in Ohio. Cleveland State University also been a draw for tenants to these buildings.

more to come for the cle clinic campus, if rather vague at this point —

Cleveland Clinic to expand, modernize main campus, CEO says

Published: Jan. 28, 2026
By Julie Washington, cleveland.comadvance local express

CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Cleveland Clinic is developing plans to expand and modernize a large portion of its main campus, CEO Dr. Tom Mihaljevic told reporters this week after his annual State of the Clinic presentation.

Mihaljevic provided few additional details about the plan, but Clinic officials, in follow-up emails with cleveland.com, described how the Clinic is “developing a comprehensive main campus master plan to build, expand and modernize our facilities so we can continue delivering the highest level of care to our patients and community.”

well unfortunately they tore down historic st vincents charity hospital (1856) and now the also historic and beautiful old juvenile detention center campus across the street (1931). the juvie campus was the oldest in the usa and was a model when it was built.

no one would take these structures to redevelop them — it was just too much to handle.

plans are to build a highway cap to connect to a campus district and perhaps csu housing.

ugh.

Just some minor updates; more of the "dirt being moved around" for the Flats East Bank (and yes, they're making visible progress as far as site prep), moved the UH Seidman Cancer Hospital to 'Completed'. It looks like good weather this weekend so hopefully I can get out and get some photo updates.

What the image shows is pretty expansive. Is there a timeline? How realistic is this?
