Our speed limits are so slow though...

Check this out for example. 70MPH (112km/h) on a rural two lane highway in Texas.

Doing 99km/h on Hwy 144 you must have been nearly run off the road.

I'm surprised they'd be able to sustain that speed for a long period of time without crashing. There are a lot of pretty tight turns and hills on that road. 144km/h on this? I wouldn't.

The night I was driving, some curves were near 90-degree turns so that even 90 km/h was difficult.

That highway in Texas isn't on the Canadian Shield. No rock cuts, sharp curves and much nicer weather.

I do agree that speed limits in Ontario are slower than they should really be. Most highways in Northern Ontario with a maximum of 80 should really be 90. Portions of Hwys 11 and 17 should be 100.

I normally drive 99 km/h when the maximum is 80 because the OPP normally doesn't stop anybody who is going less than 20 over the limit. I have been almost run off the road on Hwy 144 and it was almost always transports. In Winter or any bad weather, I normally slow down a lot if I see one coming. The guardrails on a number of curves are so close to the road as there isn't a shoulder.

Montana has high speed limits on rural roads as well. They have both winter and mountains.

I agree. Highway 11 between Kenogami Lake and Ramore, between Hearst and Longlac and between Geraldton and Jellicoe should have a speed limit of 100 kph, likewise for 17 between Rolphton and Matawa and between Reith and English River (except through Upsala), 101 east of Matheson, 655 north of Timmins.

It’ll be ironic if it’s closed in May due to wildfire...

The only reroute is through Algonquin Park.

OPP’s suggested detour’s a bit crazy though. Why not 17 -> 41 (or Renfrew County Road 58) -> 60 -> 11 and vice versa?

Edit: Coming from Pembroke and points north, that is.

Hwy 11 is closed between Cochrane and Smooth Rock Falls due to a collision.

The weather in Timmins today wasn't too bad. Rain mixed with ice pellets and snow. It only stuck to the ground for maybe a couple hours during the day in the urban sector. But just North of here within city limits was really bad. Photos show the road to Kamiskotia being quite snow covered and difficult to drive. Further North up along Hwy 11 between Cochrane and Kapuskasing was really bad and there were multiple accidents. A transport went off the road too.

I wonder if Yakabuski will have a lot to explain since Mattawa’s part of Renfrew - Pembroke - Nipissing too, IIRC.

I just realized something: Did Ford ask JT for money to cover 417 extension to Renfrew or 17 twinning from Manitoba?

I doubt Yabinski is going to have to do too much explaining about a culvert washout during a spring flood. Sure it sucks for everyone, but it's one of those things that's beyond anyone's control.

Ford and Trudeau don't have the warmest relationship, so I wouldn't expect too much in terms of new Canada-Ontario partnerships between now and the election.

I bet he was one of those MPPs that voted for the lowering of funds for flooding. Oh the irony of the timing.

Mattawa is part of the Nipissing electoral district and finance minister Vic Fedeli is MPP. (I restraining myself from giving my opinion of Fedeli)

He used to be one of the more respected conservatives and quite moderate but he's now Doug Ford's lapdog.
