Mussen Cattell Mackey Partnership has applied to the City of Vancouver for permission to alter the approved development permit as follows:

Additional Heritage Density
Interior changes to Heritage details
Interior changes to configuration of commercial spaces
Additional entries to retail units on ground level
Changes to bike facilities and parking stalls
Associated landscaping on various levels
Quote:
The Conservation Plan submitted with the Development Permit (DP) indicated the four panels of the marble Dedication Inscription should be “relocated to a prominent public area within the new interior space of the Main Post Office.” In the approved DP drawings, the location of the Dedication Inscription was notionally suggested to be in the South Tower office lobby at the corner of Homer and West Georgia Streets. In subsequent discussions with the Owner, project Architect, and heritage consultant, a more public location in the retail concourse on Dunsmuir Street was selected for this piece, as the South Tower office lobby is now intended to serve a single tenant with a high level of security. Leaving the Dedication Inscription in the South Tower office lobby would limit the public’s access to this important original element. Repositioning the Dedication Inscription to the retail concourse permits unimpeded public access to it and aligns with the intent of the reinstallation conditions as set out in the approved
Conservation Plan.

It sat at the same height on the building for 65 years when it was on Homer. Why would there be a problem when there will be more people around when the new retail and offices open?

More crazies and brain-damaged folks, combined with lousy law-enforcement of late perhaps?

How many Hudson's Bay and Nordstrom windows have been smashed in the past 2 years? Those are also in busy areas.

i think by this being the post office, that kept people away from it. its some big imposing federal government institution that was literally built as a bomb shelter.

but now its open/airy/for people. so yeah i think it will attract more vandalism now than previously.

^Plus it's Amazon which some people see as a Halliburton or Philip Morris.

I think it's pretty clear that people are just randomly tagging things that used to be off limits. But it still isn't as rampant as say Chinatown so I doubt it's a huge risk.

Amazon has closed all of its book stores, so no chance of getting one of those

Its looking good but the old colours of the post office were never that attractive and they just kind of look a little dated and meh.

Ya the post office appeal is because of it's authenticity and one of the big examples of that type of architecure and is considered historic now. But it is not pretty, at least in the conventional sense. I am glad they kept it as close as possible to the original, it is still very much identifiable as the post office building, not like some facadeism.

I don't mind it at all, but both old & new here are typical and unexciting examples of corporate and civic architecture from their respective eras, mid-century, and current. You could even say that it is "Bland On Bland".

I'm still surprised Amazon didn't open a Whole Foods here.. and let the competition take the space.. they must have had the option to do so.

Even an Amazon Go or Amazon Fresh store would be a cool thing to have here.

Ron.
