It's like the brutalism that was popular on college campuses in the 70s but now 🌟 modern 🌟

the UBC campus is unfortunately one of the most depressing campuses in Canada (at least amongst the top schools like UofT or McGill etc). Perhaps SFU is even more so.

SFU at least sticks to the concept pretty well.

Great.
That will transform the vibe of that neighbourhood.
I hope the ugly Dentistry building across the road from this site gets a redo as well

Seems like they are just planning on renovating/expanding it.

Quote:
A renovation and expansion of the J.B. MacDonald (JBM) Building to address three critical issues for the Faculty of Dentistry:

Shortage of research and office space.
Shortage of appropriately serviced space due to aging building systems in JBM.
Consolidation of Faculty of Dentistry functions in JBM and David Strangway 2nd floor.

They are finally replacing the 2 ugly chemistry/physics buildings near University Blvd: Buildings A and B.

Had my first ever uni lecture here so lots of memories. But these bunkers have to go

The Chem building A doesn't bother me at all, it looks very sciencey/lab-like, doesn't seem outdated to me at all. I find it odd they are replacing A & B, with A being the newest building? From Wiki:

https://wiki.ubc.ca/Chemistry_Building
Construction of the Chemistry Building (then known as the Science Building) began with the centre wing (D Block) in 1914[1][4][5]. However, it was left unfinished due to the outbreak of the First World War[1][4]. After the war, the building became a focal point of the Great Trek when more than a thousand students flocked to the unfinished structure to call for the establishment of the UBC Point-Grey campus[4][5]. The building was eventually completed in 1925, and was renamed as the Chemistry Building in 1949[4]. Additional blocks were added in the following decades, starting with the B Block in 1959, the E Block in 1962, and the C Block in 1963[4]. The A Block, which is known separately as the Chemistry Physics Building, was added in 1989[3][4].

It should be B & C torn down, not A. Or how about they replace Buchanan already, that complex is wayyyy worse, it's a joke it is still there.

Probably because A & B are contiguous and easier to develop with a single new building.

A and B are generally one of the first buildings to come into view when you enter the campus through University Blvd (aka the "front gate").

It's the worst eyesore and doesn't fit the modern landscape design at all.

Also, have you sat in one of their lecture halls?
You can't even see what the prof is writing when you sit at the back in one of the main lecture halls underground.
Also, the alley between A and C is always so damp and moldy.
Buchanan is old, but it's clean and straightforward.

You also get the impression that there isn't much modern research space available because so many of the rooms are dedicated to lab space.
As a visual learner, I dreaded taking courses and labs there.

It seems that any time anyone uses newer construction techniques like mass timber, they spend so much time on the structural side that they forget to make the building look interesting.

I mean that can be said about any building on campus but they obviously split up buildings by usage/departments.

As a UBC alumnus, can someone please point out to me the formerly great architecture UBC used to have that this building strays away from? It looks like an extremely standard UBC building to me.
