UNFINISHED YOUNG STREET APARTMENT BURNS

—————

A vacant, seven-storey apartment building under construction in Winnipeg’s West End neighborhood caught fire Tuesday night.

Firefighters responded to the build, located in the 300 block of Young Street, around 5:30 p.m., a Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service platoon chief said, speaking from the scene.

Fire crews arrived to find a flames and smoke billowing from the building, but were able to quickly get the fire under control.

WFPS cleared the scene around two hours later.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation, the platoon chief said.

Brutal. 380 Young was supposed to be some nice affordable units. Arson or a tarp fire? I wonder. I sure hope it's salvageable.

Oh man, that's awful. I've been watching this building go up everyday and I was really excited for it to be finished.

I thought that Young St building was concrete. If they managed to get it under control quickly it should be OK.

The thing is of all of the contenders, Niverville really doesn't have any "bones" to build around. It is kind of just a bunch of houses and WM Dyck & Sons.
they have a MJHL team, new arena, Pita Pit, Dominos and Smitty's all in past 2 years, that must make them a City soon, lol

I don't think it was a deep pocketed developer, either. It's OCN, and the idea was that students from the FN studying in Winnipeg along with their members, elders, etc. living here would have affordable housing.

I've seen 24/7 security on site at some construction sites and it's starting to feel like that's going to be a necessity with all the arson. Another expense to drive up construction costs.

Does anyone know what's going on construction-wise with the old Pony Corral location on St. Mary that warrants two lanes of the street to be closed???

Looks like a fairly contained fire to me. I would assume it's salvageable - but will have lots of smoke damage to contend with, replacement of wiring etc. and possibly water damage if the interior was already insulated and drywalled. Hopefully they are insured.

Looks pretty bad to me. Saving grace may be the fact that this is an OCN project. The Feds will step in to fix it the moment it hits CBC.

Wasn't there supposed to be a complete reclad of this building? What happened to that?

Plans are to have the exterior renovations completed by fall 2024.

From my amateur fire sleuth eye, it appears the fire mostly went up the exterior of the building. There isn't any smoke damage visible from the window openings on either side of the obviously burnt area indicating it probably didn't get too involved within the interior.

Here's to hoping. Between Stradbroke and this, there is an uncomfortably high amount of new builds burning lately.

^ are there?

For wood construction, the buildings are most vulnerable before the interior drywall goes on. Prior to this happening, it's basically a bunch of matchsticks, and will go up quickly.

Once the drywall is on, it's much more protected.

Speaking of. Anyone know of movement with the site at Kimberley and London? After the fire, the site was cleared of debris and a big hole in the ground remains.

Well, it's a real-life example of Fuck Around and Find Out, innit?

We spent how many years listening to people bleat about how high our taxes were [narrator's voice: they weren't] so the city froze them. But that just deferred maintenance and builds that should have happened earlier that now we're all on the hook for in a time of high construction inflation.

Well done, tax-fighters, well done! /s
