I'm sure it's a fine state. It's just not one for a city slicker. I'm sure there are also nice areas of Des Moines I'd enjoy. The downtown is auto focused to the extreme!!!

In Calgary at the moment and I'm not sure what's more ugly - the sculptures themselves, or the controversy surrounding them in the local media.

More importantly, why exactly do we need "freeway art"? Landscaping can be nice but seems to me large scale art pieces are better placed in more accessible / visible areas.

It's because of the 1% of capital projects has to go to art rule. It would be better if they could just pool it to put it at sites people might actually visit as opposed to sewage treatment plants and freeway interchanges.

I kinda agree with the guy running for councillor - seeing what it looks like, if I were a Calgary taxpayer I'd expect to have to financially contribute to the bill for cleaning up the site of these rusted debris on a public right-of-way, not the other way around (paying to put up rusted debris).

P.S. There was a disaffected industrial plant in the Bécancour Industrial Park that had a tower on the site that was just a rusted steel frame, it was considered an eyesore even though the area is all zoned industrial. Eventually, the owners of the site paid to get it dismantled. That's what it reminds me of.
