Agreed with the above criticism. The new addition looks a bit dated and would benefit from a better relationship to the podium, through some red accents or even vertical fins that emulate the original grid at the bottom.

On another note, i could've sworn i saw the lighting feature being tested on the new addition about a week ago. The horizontal bands were changing colours though i couldn't snap a picture as i was driving.

Ron.
The predominant feeling in heritage preservation now is that any new addition should be clearly delineated so people are aware of what the original structure looked like vs the addition. Hence the new addition here is clear and of a fairly simple design that doesn't detract from the original.

This is miles better than the Bay proposal which visually crushes the heritage building under the bulk of the addition.

it's no gem but I think it's ok. The building is on par with other buildings in the neighbourhood. The old post office has no architectural quality worth praising, so I think continuation to the tower would only look horrendous.

A lot of things wrong with this city are the fault of planners trying to act as architects. exterior design isn't everything. The project must also fit into the aesthetic preference of the property owners and commercial tenants. What if amazon prefers light exposure and a clean facade over clay tiles that grow moldy every 2 years?

You'd essentially get a tan version of The Electra

I just don't think there is a way to pacify the type of people who log in to a highrise development discussion board to complain about literally every single highrise development happening in this city, on a daily basis.

The build form fits right in on that intersection between Vancouver playhouse, the BC hydro building, and VCC. The architects really nailed the city's requirement on preserving neighbourhood character.

Although regular contributors to the forum don't like this project the people that work in the buildings around this project are actually very happy with the building. I have talked to a number of people and I also work in the area myself so I know that most are excited about the completion of the changes and additions. The parts that are done have already made a dramatic improvement to the feeling of the neighborhood. Once the project is done and the offices have been filled this area will definitely start to pop.

I don't mind it - except for the white strips which appear to be light strips.
I think a more sympathetic approach would have been a grid of or randomized light squares to relate to the grid on the heritage podium.

Agreed. MCMP always delivers. Big or small.

They literally seek out places where they get punished. Is this what masochism looks like? This project replaced a block-sized derelict warehouse that's been sitting vacant for decades. Honestly, this is the best that part of town has ever looked.

If you really care about aesthetics, that block is in no shortage of ugly buildings for you to complain about. How about the CBC Vancouver building that looks more like a prison than an office? How about the Vancouver playhouse that looks more like a warehouse? How about the sandman hotel looking like it's trying to get bought out by BC housing? Amazon office is one of the best-looking buildings around.

I agree. it's not just the cleanup of the old building and the new office space but the public space inside will really help that stretch of Georgia. Add in the new Art Gallery and someone looking for a downtown condo would do well to look at the Spectrum towers. A lot of value being added to that neighbourhood.

I actually like the old post office. No block-filling building is ever going to be graceful but that midcentury institutional style is clean and pretty rare in Vancouver. I can only think of the Service Canada building at 10th & Quebec or the Buchanan Building at UBC. Any others?

I agree the architecture of this is not exciting at all. What I am excited about is the improvements to the public realm compared to the walled off bunker that has existed for so long. I mean imagine this spot on a summer day......

Where's the two guys on the bench with the shopping cart full of junk and three bikes, or the half naked guy starting a conversation with and then arguing with people who aren't actually there?

Are we talking about the correct building here? I don't see a lot that says this is downtown Vancouver.

For serious it doesn't look bad as you will probably have landscape maintenance and building security but those renderings always have WAY too many people in them. You almost never see crowds of pedestrians hanging around non-touristy plazas like that.

Time will tell but I think that spot will be popular. Between workers having their lunch breaks, locals grabbing groceries, wandering tourists, and rowdy Canucks or Whitecaps fans walking to and from games the potential is there for constant street life. It reminds me of a similar set up outside of a grocery store in Amsterdam that I visited that was always busy with people.

Edit*

Found the Amsterdam spot on streetview.

Agreed - biggest plus is the opening up of the walls on the sides and back of the building, and what will be inside.

The Dilawri Plaza steps at the Vancouver Public Library typically have people sitting there at lunch.
I think the main requirement is that it face south for sunlight - which The Post's steps do (subject to the dreaded shadowing from the Library Square tower).

This is an awesome development for downtown Vancouver. Can't beat a project featuring office towers on top a large mall podium.

Only sad thing is there won't be such a large building that can ever be built downtown in the future, as current policies just won't allow it.
