Mt. Pleasant Fire

Frenchies is toast.

I've seen more than a few fires in this neighbourhood over the years, so it's not super surprising to see one more. Frenchies Diner near Main and Broadway burnt right to the ground, with major damage to the buildings next door. Probly won't be able to save the neighbouring buildings, which is too bad because these buildings and their tenants are what give energy to the neighbourhood.

It's very easy to see how much temptation to "accidentally" have a little fire or flood, and an insurance claim that many many struggling small businesses must be under right now.

I'm definitely not implying that happened here nor on the fire on Cambie and King Edward, but man, I bet we see a few more fires during covid, and I bet we find out some of them were for the reason I suggest.

My heart is out for all the small entrepreneurs suffering through these times. I go out of the way to frequent these small restaurants and cafes in the area just to help keep them alive. The stress the owners are under is unbearable, and then the city makes it even more onerous to survive. So if anybody was to just throw in the towel and have a get-out option like that, I'd get it.

That block will, inevitably, fall to the hands of a big developer and become a sizable tower. Sadly, now might be a better time than later for the small businesses to either sell, move or quit.

City Duo Closes The Book On 2020 – Yet The Quest For Boxed Coffee Resumes In Early January

It’s that time of year again where Hannah and I decide to catch up on a little sleep rather than argue over the better choice of words to describe some random civic meeting. It’s certainly tempting to focus on the tragedies of this year, both in our own lives, and in the wider city sense. Yet 2020 has already been hard enough, and rather than stew in it, we’re going to look forward to better days.

The next couple weeks will provide some reprieve, as Hannah looks forward to finishing The Burning White, while I’ll be enjoying Dragon Quest XI. We’ll also use the time to catch up on a few articles we’ve meant to write from earlier this year, like our tour of the Ironworks industrial offices, and a pair of co-op buildings in the Fraser Lands. There’s a few Urban Design Panel reviews to cover too, though their official, but boring, minutes have already been published.

While our regular content should resume around January 6th, 2021, we’ll remain somewhat active on social media to make it a little easier to stay engaged with the events in our city, and region. That’s been difficult this year, as virtual open house events are far less interesting than their in-person equivalents. So, we’re looking forward to getting our poke in the arm, and once again suffering through a cup of boxed coffee as we marvel over a scale model.

Thank you for all for your efforts that help us continue to do this. Without your support, critiques, and light-hearted ripping on shopping malls, this wouldn't be any fun. We look forward to the time when we can bump into all of you on the streets taking photos, at open houses, or even at city hall once again.

^ You two are an incredible asset to not just the forum, but the city in general. Thank you so much for your hard work, and having to deal with the BS that comes along with what you do.

Happy holidays!

Here's a few of our photos of the most recent work to come out B + B Scale Models. The rest can be found in the 1200 Stewart St thread in the Seattle forum or on City Duo's Instagram.

Who needs steel bracing when you have milk crates for the foundation lol.

Looks great, takes a real set of unique skills to create these pieces of art.

Is Vancouver ready?

Having read with horror what happens to Texas, can't help but think of ourselves? Is Vancouver ready for the next natural disaster? Hope our city planners take note.

Lesson is that you'll most likely be screwed and should be prepared to be self-sufficent until they mobilize resources.

When it comes to natural disasters in Vancouver, I think earthquake is the scenario of choice and cause. Cold snaps such as in Texas can happen, though usually more mitigated by geography.
Extreme prolonged heat & drought are possible, but mitigated, again to to the north west coastal location. Depends on the type, probablity and intensity of the event, I reckon.

Earthquake-wise, you are supposed to be able to be self-suffcient for a week before resources can get to you.

The City of Vancouver say you need to have all you might need for 72 hours, but a week is a good idea. I suspect very few households match the suggested lists, and some items seem unrealistic. You're advised to have a 'grab and go bag' that would fill some apartment's entire storage. Then you're also supposed to have a 'home kit with 4 litres of water available per person per day (so 12 litres per person) as well as another list of items, and an isolation kit with a lot of the same things that are in the grab and go bag. If you're taking medication, are you likely to have two spare, in date items sitting in separate kits?

But, having said that; Earthquake Zone, major shake due or overdue, and look at what's happening in Texas.

I keep my small camp stove and fuel in the corner of a closet (instead of in the basement storage) for just this reason. I should probably use my camp water containers for the same.

As a Vancouverite, we are probably the most complacent people. We are blessed with beautiful scenery, mild weather , cultural tolerance ( to a certain extent) , political stability. If the only thing we complain about Vancouver weather is rain, we are daunt lucky. I always have the thought that one of these days dear God will teach us a good lesson. Hence I will learn from the Texans , I will get ready for the next disaster now. I hope you would too.

In terms of water keeping one or more 4 litre jugs of tap water frozen in the freezer is always a good idea for both emergencies and the freezer's operation.

I saw these in White Rock the other day. This will be a permanent installation. The development they are in looks really well done with nice public space.
