I just remembered that he said something regarding playing in Moncton about a week or two ago when asked where the Tiger-Cats would play (I follow the Hamilton Pan-Am Stadium discussion).

Hopefully, Halifax will soon have its own CFL team to cheer for. (maybe a professional soccer team also)

I agree and posted this in the CFL maritimes thread:

Halifax sends strong message to CFL

Stadium to go ahead with or without World Cup: report

News 95.7
Doug Reynolds Feb 07, 2011 05:23:21 AM

Mayor Peter Kelly says Halifax getting a stadium isn't a question of "if," but "when."

HRM staff will be presenting a report to council tomorrow asking for $100,000 to begin phase one of the stadium project.

The preliminary phase includes a business plan and consultation with citizens and sporting groups.

Halifax is looking to be part of the FIFA 2015 Women's World Cup, if Canada wins its bid - but the council report states the stadium project will continue whatever the decision.

The mayor tells Metro Halifax we have to move the HRM forward to avail ourselves of greater opportunities down the road.

This is great news. This is what the CFL was waiting for: Halifax to commit to a stadium that will likey hold 25,000 permanent seats.
Essentially work can begin now in Halifax on acquiring a franchise which could be in place not long after Ottawa rejoins.

Moncton should be applauded for possibly waking up Halifax out of a coma.
Halifax wants the Uteck Bowl back and its going to get it.
At least Moncton can look forward to some more regular season games in the near future and possibly some Halifax games.

And Now the question again what to name this new Halifax based team?

JUST A REMINDER. The stadium will be discussed this afternoon at city hall (sometime after 1:00 PM Atlantic time - there will be a non-televised discussion of the budget first). I hope to watch the stadium discussion on haligonia.ca. However, if I can't then hopefully others will have time to watch it and report on it afterward. Also, if any interesting images are presented I hope that somebody will do a screen capture (I will do it, if I am free to watch the proceedings).

A "business case" only makes sense for something like this if you can quantify the benefit to the public. The overall benefit, not monetary profit, is why the HRM is looking at building a stadium.

Good to hear that they've commissioned a study that will put a variety of options on the table. It's usually a disaster when councillors speculate.

they did talk about the bridge terminal but i didnt tune in on time for that, but they did approve something to do with it..
and they also stated that this stadium needs to be put together for the community with such things as the universitys, schools, amateur sport, events, shows, concerts, ect.
and they also hinted a dal return to football but that might just be speculating

Just listened to 95.7 and Mr. Cohen sounds like he would be interested in talking to Halifax about a franchise as he has been watching the stadium idea progress in Halifax. He said 25,000 is the magic number but sounds like 23,000+ would probably suffice.

And congrats to fenwick.

Who would have thought when you started this thread over a year ago we would have made it to this point this quickly!!

I missed the discussion on the stadium. I just got home and wasn't free during the day to listen.

Were there any renderings of the Nussli permanent stadium that Mayor Kelly was considering?

It's on Eastlink right now if you want to watch.

They are discussing the transit terminal right now.

I don't think that I can get that in Ontario - is there an internet feed?

Did you miss the point? The real benefit to the community will not show up in a buisness case that you plunk on a table for financing but will be measured by citizen approval.

- Cogswell interchange cannot accommodate a stadium - you can't build a stadium on 5 acres.
- Cogswell interchange, if ever torn down for 5-10 million, should be slated for office and hotel development

So is there any clear direction in where the location is to be, or is that still up in the air?

I think the Burnside/ Shannon Park would be the most ideal as either the city owns the land or the feds'

Key men Peter MacKay and potiental CFL owner

Councillor Walker mentioned the Peter MacKay who has power to get money from Harper to support a major stadium for Halifax was said to be on local TV and said that the site he was on would be a perfect site to build a stadium in Halifax. Did anyone see that TV clip to know what site he was referring to. Anyway I believe Mayor Kelly and council are seriuos and they said if the first two phases are improved the stadium will be completed by Jan. 2014 and construction would begin early in 2012. Also only one councillor voted against phase one going ahead and that was Rankin, who said to me a year ago at a CBC inforamtion promo at Pier 21 that if he had anything to do with it, Halifax will never get a stadium. I replied you should be tossed out of council for that statement.

I really believe the potiental CFL owner will be at the table, especially after hearing Mark Cohon say today that they will be definitely interested in talking to Halifax about a stadium and a CFL franchise and that he and the CFL would like to explore all options where there are new stadiums being build!

I received a message form Councillor Fisher who read your post:

Quote:
Hi Kevin,
Hope all is well. I see from skyscraper that your group is up to date on what is going on-good to see you all following along and posting your thoughts.
Please feel free to mention to someone123 that council is not paid to be experts on important municipal issues, we decide on important issues after gaining information from experts. Big difference. There are lots of hoops to go thru to get a stadium built, we deal with lots of personal attacks from the folks who don't want one built, but this seems to me to be the first Council bashing I have seen from someone who is in favour of a stadium.

Take care, all the best,

Darren
I believe Councillor Fisher's remarks were in a lighthearted manner. I have to agree, we tend to think that Councillors should know everything and be blamed for everything, which isn't really the case.

I really appreciate the fact that Mayor Kelly, Councillor Fisher, Councillor Hendsbee and Councillor Sloane are sticking their necks out to support a stadium and taking verbal shots from all the naysayers in the HRM (I don't mean someone123, I am thinking of the dedicated naysayers who oppose everything. I know that someone123 is in favour as are most people on this online forum.)
