Saskatoon opened two new bridges this week.

Traffic Bridge
This river crossing dates back to 1907 when a steel truss bridge was constructed to connect the community of Nutana on the east side of the river with the communities of Saskatoon and Riversdale on the west side as part of the formation of the City of Saskatoon.

As it was the first non rail crossing constructed, it was known from the beginning as the Traffic Bridge for its function within the fledgling city.

Deterioration and neglect led to the permanent closure of the original bridge in 2010. City Council opted to build a (rather unfortunate) near replica in place of the old bridge, rather than something architecturally significant, or something for pedestrians and cyclists only. However, the traffic lanes are wider than the narrow old bridge, as well as the pedestrian/cycling pathways.

Chief Mistawasis Bridge
This is a new crossing in the city's far north end, built to connect the fast-growing northeast neighbourhoods on the east side of the river with the north industrial employment area on the west side of the river.

The bridge was named as a response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action. Chief Mistawasis was a signatory of Treaty Six, which encompasses the Saskatoon region, and the traditional hunting grounds of his band include the area.

It's too bad about the replica reconstruction of the Traffic Bridge, that was a real missed opportunity to build a real show piece like the Peace Bridge in Calgary, Walterdale in Edmonton or Esplanade Riel in Winnipeg.

We have been discussing that for years now on the Saskatoon thread. Huge missed opportunity.

Wasauksing Swing Bridge (Parrysound Swing Bridge)

Source: Wikipedia.com

The historic Wasauksing Swing Bridge, originally built in 1895, is the Wasauksing First Nation's only road access to the mainland, and an important crossing for area residents and visitors. The bridge is owned and maintained by the Government of Canada through Indigenous Services Canada (ISC), and operated by the Wasauksing First Nation.

There are a number of these dotted throughout cottage country in Ontario.

The High Level is neither infamous or famous, but she is beautiful. Love taking the streetcar from my buddy's place in Oliver into Strathcona in the summer

The Rosedale Valley Bridge (also called the Rosedale Ravine Bridge[1]) is a covered arch bridge in the northeast of Downtown Toronto, Ontario. Built in 1966 by architect John B. Parkin (now part of Delcan Corporation), the concrete bridge carries Line 2 trains of the subway across the Rosedale Ravine

Although the bridge once had open skylights for ventilation, they were later covered to reduce noise to the surrounding area.[4] It can be seen from the north side of Bloor Street, which crosses from the adjacent Prince Edward Viaduct, or from below on Rosedale Valley Road which it passes over.
