Taking a good look at those renders of the base, I'd wager that it'll be a little while before we really see this thing take off vertically. That double-height floor on the east and north side of the base looks like it's supported by really wide spans between the columns, which will probably have to be encased in concrete. And while they don't necessarily support the rest of the tower, they probably bear some small percentage of lateral loads, so they'll probably case those columns in concrete before moving vertical with the regular tower floors, like they did with the floors below it.

Just my two "armchair engineer" cents.

Sweet. I was hoping it would as all the WTC buildings should be very prominent in the skyline

Yeah, the base is not fully complete, going from the renders...

Those underground levels themselves can be a building.

What goes in those lower levels, anyway? Offices? Retail? Mechanicals? Secret Development Labs for Superheroes?

Exclamation

Most likely for retail, link to transportation facilities, gold vaults, and very tight security.

They are meant to work together with the neighboring buildings as a single underground complex. Having seen the plans, I won't elaborate much, but I can't imagine how the hell they're going to make things work without at least the basement levels for towers 2&3 as well as the Path terminal. Think of loading docks that would face the abyss of an undeveloped pit where access ramps should have been.

That's exactly why everything is going to be built now. Silverstein knew all of those pieces had to go together.

Question

But aren't they going to put gold vaults (like the previous WTC complex) and mechanical equipment in those lower levels?

Always good to see more steel installed at this site. Now if it can just take off like WTC1 at the other end of that pit
