A five-year construction shutdown appears to be lifting on a tower in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, designed to be the world's tallest — good news for its Chicago-based architect and Chicago's vulnerable supertall building ecosystem. Adrian Smith & Gordon Gill Architecture designed what is now known as Jeddah Tower to be the first kilometer-tall building, at more than twice the height of the Willis Tower. Construction began in 2013 but ground to a halt by 2018 about a third of the way up at the 62nd or 63rd story.

Construction on world’s tallest building resumes after 5-year hiatus

.....a Dubai-based publication called Middle East Economic Digest (MEED) reports that developer Jeddah Economic Company is seeking bids through the end of this year for a new contractor able to complete the super-tall.

“The tower will be more than 1,000 meters [over 3,280-feet] tall, and it is back in full motion,” a source close to the project told MEED, the magazine reported.

The leviathan is designed by Adrian Smith + Gill Gordon Architecture, the same Chicago-based firm behind Manhattan’s Central Park Tower, which stands at 131 stories and 1,550 feet in the air, making it the globe’s highest residential building.

Who would actually want to work or live 2,000 feet up in this thing? All you would see in either direction is sand...and maybe the Red Sea.

Are there any issue with concrete curing given there has been a 5(+) year hiatus in construction.
I mean, I thought these Concrete type constructions needed regular pours to have one floor blend (i.e. "cure") into the next.
With a 5 year gap, does this not introduce some sort of "sheer zone" into the structure?

I mean I wouldn't be surprised if in 10-20 years, Jeddah's skyline takes off. Don't forget the tower is just the centerpiece of a whole new city. Not to mention Jeddah itself already has a few buildings in a different part of the city. I feel confident in saying that Jeddah is the new Dubai.

No, all they need is rebar through the construction joint.

They may need a new catagory if this thing gets completed. Any tower over 3000 feet is Hyper-tall. If I recall correctly, construction stopped at 880 feet.

Designed by Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, the structure will stand at 3,281 feet tall when completed in the next four to five years, nearly 11 times the height of the Statue of Liberty. “The design for Jeddah Tower is rooted in the symbolism of Saudi Arabia while looking toward the future by being technologically expressive,” explain Smith and Gill in a joint statement to AD. “Its slender, subtly asymmetrical massing evokes the new growth of palm fronds shooting upward from the land—a symbol of new life heralding future growth for the kingdom.”

“Jeddah Tower construction has restarted…the tower is expected to be completed within four to five years,” the Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), the developer, confirms in a statement to AD. The business has solicited several contractors for proposal, and JEC is currently assessing bids. “We’re targeting to select a contractor within two to three months,” the statement finishes.

Before it was halted, builders had finished about a third of the building. When completed, the tower will stand at around 3,281 feet, or one kilometer. It will be about 564 feet taller than the Burj Khalifa, designed by Smith while he was working at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, which currently holds the record for the world’s tallest skyscraper.

Similar to the Burj Khalifa, Jeddah Tower is expected to be a mixed-use building, offering both residential, commercial, and office space. There will also be an observation deck (currently planned to be the world’s tallest), a Four Seasons hotel, and a 98-foot-diameter outdoor balcony, which was originally designed as a helipad.

Saudi Binladin Group is set to resume construction work on the long-stalled Jeddah Tower, the 1,000-metre-high skyscraper set to be the tallest structure in the world when completed.

Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Holding Company (KHC) announced on Wednesday that Jeddah Economic Company has signed off on an agreement with the Saudi Binladin Group to resume the project.

The agreement is valued at $1.918 billion (SAR7.2 billion), of which $293 million (SAR1.1 billion) has already been paid out for works previously completed on the tower. Jeddah Economic Company will finance the tower’s remaining construction through internal funding and banking facilities, Kingdom Holding said in an statement to the Saudi bourse Tadawul.
