I agree with you about the parking. The visible parking garage bothers me more than the width of the building.

Based on the rendering, is there reason to believe the front 1/3 of the parking garage is actually office space? And if so, the parking garage is mostly hidden in the middle of the block. I think it's a pretty smart concept.

I think it's a safe assumption based on the renderings that the front 1/3 is in fact office space. Still wishing it were slimmer and had a taller, more defined crown. That said I'm happy this tower is getting built, more edges and curves are currently needed IMO.

I don't think that's a safe assumption at all. You can literally see cars in the windows in the renderings.

Yikes! Your right, I was so busy looking at the glass I didn’t notice the cars. (Couldn’t see the forest for the trees haha) That does put it into perspective just how much parking this project has.

I think it’s going to come down to how nice the glass looks. It’s possible that people on the ground won’t even notice. It’s actually not uncommon for towers to include parking at the base, I’ve seen it in Chicago and LA.

I wish it wasn’t parking so more people would take public transit, but the parking at the base lifts the tower up by an additional 100 feet. If they are told to reduce parking, it will likely mean the tower’s height would drop with it. So I’m kinda torn.

As for the width, I’m not really bothered by it. I actually like all of SLC’s wide towers. Waking down Main beneath Wells Fargo is the only time I feel like I’m in a big city. You can just feel it’s weight above you. I suspect the CCH will feel much the same.

I think Sundial just looks odd because the width goes east-west against the typical north-south flow of the towers downtown.

In Seattle, if you're in core transit areas, like this one, the minimum parking is zero, and there are caps on the amount of parking you can provide. There are also penalties for having parking above ground.

Rumor on Reddit is that the PEG residential project next to Sundial will be a tower with a complimentary design and of comparable height.

Notes on Theater Tower:

• Being rebranded from "Main Street Apartments" to "150 S Main"
• Another year of design work to go, then two years of construction
• Confirmed that they are working on incorporating the Tiffany skylight into the new building.
• No new renderings except maybe this one showing more of the midblock walkway than before

I'm glad they are considering changing the name. So...2024-ish?

As for the Tiffany skylight I kind of wish the State would take it and put it in that 'Utah State History Museum' they have been mulling for a while now (at least rumored to be part of the Station Center project). It could be great in the lobby, a hallway, or something similar. That would be better, in my opinion at least, than having it hidden in a private apartment tower where the public can't easily see.

2024 is really shaking up to be a huge year for downtown Salt Lake.

• 370 S Main tower scheduled to complete
• 150 S Main tower likely completes
• Phase II of The West Quarter and its towers was scheduled to complete (may be pushed back)
• Worthington Tower???

If all of this happens, 2024 will likely go down as one of the most important years in Downtown Salt Lake City's history.

I know it was touched on over on Reddit, but I thought I would post the link and the doc here as well for anyone who might have missed it.

2. Knowing that the building is supposed to evoke Sundial Peak, and not a traditional sundial, helps me accept it a bit more. I still don't like the width and how it's a veritable wall looking north-south, butttttt after they fix everything I hate about it I'll probably love it.
3. I'll find other things to complain about.

I respectfully disagree. In my experience (I am a millennial) being raised in Utah LDS culture and have since strayed from the church I would love to be a part of this club if I wasn't moving to OKC at the end of next month. I have friends at a similar point in their life as I am and I know they will want to be members of this club. It will be a great place to network and provide social opportunities you can't get anywhere else in Utah.

The only thing I think they could have done better is to make it bigger, mainly the gym and pool area. I think they would get more people to join if the gym was bigger.

I don't have a problem with the Edison club. If it falters, that's the developers risk. But, I think it's a great location that will help enliven that area. I wish it extended to 3rd south to fill that gap at that corner though.

What’s crazy to me now, is living in Orlando and the water table so high, the buildings downtown here…not all but they sit on podiums of parking more than 5 stories high. It was such an odd thing to see. Now looking at the Sundial and seeing the response to the parking makes me laugh cuz I totally get it. Also… Orlando is no where close to even having half of the infrastructure for public transportation compared to Salt Lake. It killed me when I found out there is no light rail. Salt lake isn’t Portland or Seattle but it’s getting lots of things right…even if a building gets built that promotes driving when literally being at a light rail station. I love see the growth in Salt Lake.

One last thing…home prices out there are insane! I don’t know how the population can support homes of up to 300k plus. I get the tech jobs pay well and are bring people to Utah that can afford it. Makes me wonder where the people who can’t afford those prices will go? Homeless? Further out? Will the valley see an increase in Residential units housing multiple families? It’s just changed so much in less than 3 years. I know, I have townhomes out there.

The project has been "on hold" since November 2009.
